Change things up I absolutely love a home makeover. Whether it’s a full-scale renovation or a decorative revamp of a room, maximising the potential of a home is something that adds financial value and to the pleasure of living there. After an 18-month intermission I’m finally back on the renovation train, and with my DA approved am at the point of locking in lighting plans, flooring choices and fixtures. Who lives here? Melinda and Tom with their three children Charlie, 15, Polly 12, and Amelia, 10, along with the family’s toy cavoodle Ruby. Favourite room? Melinda: “The powder room. Going in there gives me such a shot of happiness and makes me want to linger. It’s full of all the things I love.” Top design rule? “Don’t buy it if you don’t absolutely love it. The simple beauty of a weather-beaten farm shed set in rolling swathes of pasture land dotted with gum thickets and rocky outcrops captured Kristy and Neil’s hearts and minds in 2015. You’d never guess the trials and tribulations that have plagued this idyllic patch of paradise outside of Nerriga in the NSW Southern Tablelands. In the five years that husband-and-wife duo Brad and Amanda have been here, the garden has faced countless frosts, hungry wildlife and several natural disasters. “In 2019, the drought was in full swing and we were watering every second day,” recalls Amanda. “In September we had snow… and then in December the fires came through.” The couple stayed to defend their 1850s stone cottage, which sits on nearly 13 hectares, but the damage was still significant. “We lost roughly 80 per cent of the gums on the property, along with so much habitat and wildlife,” says Amanda. When the owner of this third-floor Art Deco apartment in Sydney decided her 1930s kitchen with an ’80s benchtop renovation was ready to replaced, she hired Lauren Mahoney, founder and creative director of design firm Studio Trio, to oversee the project in 2019. Although tired and falling apart, the kitchen was east-facing and enjoyed beautiful natural lighting. “I thought a coloured kitchen would make this space luxurious and inviting,” says Lauren of the redesign, which involved a full demolition of the space. “We had to be mindful of the original Art Deco features and colours, which is why I chose this particular palette. For homeowner Amanda, days at her cottage, The Stone House, begin and end in much the same way: with a cup of tea in hand and a stroll through the paddocks, her three malamute x dogue de Bordeaux dogs gambolling beside her. When the owners of this beachside home in Sydney’s south decided to renovate their kitchen, they asked their daughter, interior designer Sarah Yarrow, to guide them through the process, which was completed in just 12 weeks in 2020. “They had inherited an early-2000s kitchen and were keen to modernise it, but in a tailored and classy way reflective of their existing style and furnishings throughout the rest of the home,” says Sarah. “Functionally, the space lacked storage which was a big consideration in the tiny footprint as the kitchen couldn’t be extended.” Naturally, a white-on-white palette that gives the illusion of space was chosen, as were integrated appliances.
