To Lauren Mahoney, creative director and founder of Sydney interior design firm Studio Trio, there was no question that this heritage home was ready for a new chapter. Taking the odd risk or two comes easily to Sonja, the owner of this luminous home on Sydney’s lower North Shore. When the interiors stylist and homewares retailer and her husband David bought the home a decade ago, it wasn’t the usual bid-in-the-front-yard occasion. Set on a leafy street of Sydney’s upper north shore, this gorgeous Federation bungalow is brimming with stunning original features which the owners, semi-retired couple Barbara and Russell, wanted to honour when they gave their lounge (see page 170) and dining room (opposite) a contemporary update. Tell us a little about creating this space. What was it inspired by? Laurence: “My home in Gueliz, Marrakech, is a very small house but it has high, white walls and I add colour with paintings, photos and textiles. I try to keep the look a bit neutral so there is not too much going on.” Have you always loved colour? “Yes – and since I moved to Marrakech and now live under the sun, colours became even more important. With their two grown children spreading their wings, a couple of empty nesters seized the opportunity to downsize from their large family home into their investment property, a charming three-storey terrace in the heart of Sydney.
