When she’s whipping up tasty recipes for Home Beautiful and others, it’s not unusual for Kerrie Worner to have the oven on eight hours a day, with multiple dishes on the go. Working from her Sydney home for the past 13 years, the foodie and food stylist made do with her compact kitchen, but with a full home renovation on the cards late last year, she jumped on the opportunity to upgrade her cook zone. “Rather than renovate the original kitchen in the centre of the house, I extended out the back, which gave me more than twice the space,” she says. Today, that cliche has made way for holistic dwellings that address the environmental challenges of our time. Commissioned to design a kitchen for an Apple employee and his wife, San Francisco-based interior designer Christine Sheldon knew the project would focus on the details. “They wanted a kitchen that was great for entertaining, super functional and provided storage for everything so the counters remained uncluttered,” says Christine. “Just like the Apple aesthetic, it had to be functional but also beautiful.” To increase space, Christine and her team removed an adjoining pantry, which allowed for a much bigger island with lots of storage and also an under mount sink. “We also moved the windows on either side of the rangehood to incorporate a 1200mm range, which allowed the island to be centered,” she says. As easy as it is to fall in love with a beautiful tub, it’s important to “choose a style that supports the daily functions in the space”, advises industrial designer Luke Di Michiel of Caroma. “In a kids’ bathroom, this may mean choosing a shallower inset style, which makes it easier to lift kids in and out.” If luxury is the goal, it’s hard to beat a deep, freestanding bath, teamed with a sculptural floor-mounted or waterfall spout for a glamorous hotel feel. They’re also far better at protecting fragile items, including glassware. Plus, they’re cheaper and, unless you spring for high-tech drawers, often last longer than drawers. CONS Cupboards have far more dark corners than drawers, so sometimes items can be hard to find and can more easily amass dirt and grime. They can also look less modern and streamlined than drawers, though selecting a handle-less style is one way to address this. Choosing the right basin is a balance between practicality and style – you want a design that makes washing up and food prep seamless, but also looks stylish. “I always tell my clients to prioritise function before form,” says John Stubbs, director of 77 Architecture.
