T here wasn’t much doubt that homeowner Lauren would live in the NSW coastal city of Newcastle one day. She had grown up in the nearby Hunter Valley and attended the University of Newcastle, and her husband, Todd, a primary school teacher, was a local too. After she had lived in Sydney and London, the now mother-of-one was eager to return. “Newcastle is such a vibrant, creative town with the best beaches,” says Lauren, who works in human resources. “It’s a little coastal hidden gem.” With close family living nearby, the couple were also keen to raise their 16-month-old daughter Joni in the area. I f this old Queenslander were a Hollywood A-lister, celebrity magazines would be abuzz over her face lift. As it turns out, it was indeed a doctor who was behind the incredible makeover. “I love medicine and the aspect of helping people,” says Violeta, a design-savvy general practitioner, who undertook the renovation of her Toowoomba home. “There’s a big creative side that medicine doesn’t give, so I fill it with interior design and fashion.” In 2014, Violeta and her husband, Alan, an orthopaedic surgeon, packed up their modern, inner-city Melbourne home and moved to regional Queensland.
