NAD says that its newest ‘Masters Series’ product, the NAD M33 BluOS DAC/amplifier, is the first integrated component to feature ‘Eigentakt’ Class-D amplifier technology from Danish manufacturer Purifi Rated with an output of 200-watts per channel, the new Class-D amplifier is said to be ‘ultra-quiet’ as well as powerful. Purifimay be a new manufacturer, but it has some of the best-known names in the audio business on board, including Bruno Putzeys, Lars Risbo, Peter Lyngdorf, Kim Madsen, Soren Poulsen, and Carsten Tinggaard. Final Link Audio has released Kanto Audio’s TUK wireless powered loudspeakers in Australia. They’re unusual for many reasons, not the least of which is that they have a phono input. Each pair of Kanto TUK speakers is powered by a 65-watt per channel Class-D amplifier that drives two 133mm aluminium-coned bass drivers and two 28.35mm AMT tweeters via a DSP active crossover network. ‘The inclusion of digital signal processing has not only allowed Kanto’s engineers to tune the speakers exactly how they wanted them to sound, it has also enabled them to improve low-end resolution by filtering out frequencies below 80Hz whenever the TUK is connected to a subwoofer,’ said Shane Lewis, of Final Link Audio. ‘This frees-up the TUK’s built-in amplifiers to focus solely on the midrange and highs.…

Zesto Audio has released its Leto Ultra Preamplifier, which has a six-position ‘Presence’ control. ‘This control adjusts the harmonic balance in the midrange and high frequencies allowing you to dial back what you may consider to be too bright, edgy or aggressive,’ said George Counnas of Zesto. ‘This is an exceptionally useful tool that addresses the inconsistencies of mastering from any source. Given that famous amplifier designer John Curl does so much work for Parasound, I mistakenly assumed that he must have been responsible for the company’s latest phono preamplifier, the Zphono XRM. I was wrong. It was actually a co-design that involved Parasound’s owner and founder, Richard Schram, and two other engineers he’s worked with for some years. John Curl did have some involvement however, because Schram told me when I was fact-checking that ‘While John Curl didn’t design the XRM, he did offer me some useful suggestions that take it up a notch from ordinary phono stages.’ As for the reason for adding yet another phono preamplifier to the Parasound product portfolio, Schram says it was the result of a thought exercise. ‘I was thinking what would a vinyl lover…

Newport Test Labs first measured the frequency response of the KEF KF92 in a room, using pink noise as the test stimulus, with the EQ setting set to ‘Room’, the result of which is shown in Graph 1. The black trace on this graph shows the response with the low-pass crossover set to maximum (140Hz) and you can see the flatness and extension of the response is exemplary, extending from 14Hz to 160Hz ±3dB. Across the region from 16Hz to 125Hz the response is ±1.25dB, which is extraordinarily linear for a subwoofer. Looking at this graph you can see that maximum output is at 65Hz and the trace is 12dB down at 10Hz and 10dB down at 200Hz. iFi has introduced a portable DCA that looks like a hip flask. Unsurprisingly, it’s called a ‘hip-dac’ and its PR company has had a field day inventing descriptions such as ‘hip-dac warms the soul with intoxicating sound’ and ‘sound as flavoursome and richly detailed as a delicious single malt Scotch.’ The new iFi hip-dac uses the same Burr-Brown ‘True Native’ DAC iFi uses in most of its products that supports PCM and DXD audio data up to 384kHz, alongside DSD from 2.8MHz to 12.4MHz (DSD64, 128 and 256). Burr-Brown’s ‘True Native’ DAC architecture means that PCM and DSD take separate pathways and DSD is not converted to PCM but remains as DSD right through to analogue conversion, benefitting from iFi’s GMT femto-precision clocking system along the way. Japanese manufacturer S’Next has released its Final B1, B2, and B3 in-ear monitors, all of which have stainless steel bodies that are available in rose-gold (B1), gunmetal (B2) and silver frost (B3) mirror-finishes. Inakustik’s new Referenz NF-1204 Air interconnect is now available in Australia through distributor Audio Marketing. One of the features of the new interconnect is that Inakustik has eliminated solder and is joining the wires directly to the RCA connectors. ‘First, just like with the Inakustik’s speaker cable, the highly-pure copper wires of the Cross Link Super Speed wave-guide are mechanically stripped from their thin lacquer coating,’ says Tim Wallis, of Audio Marketing, ‘then the tellurium-copper connector pins are crimped onto the wires using 1.5-tonnes of pressure.’ Another new feature used in the new NF-1204 Air interconnects is the shield bonding, which is hermetically sealed using a screw. hey say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and although I have admired the sound quality of Vivid Audio’s speakers for a long time now, I can’t say that I have been overly-enamoured of the curvy shapes of the cabinets. Until now. The Vivid Audio Kaya 25s are simply drop-dead gorgeous. I loved their look from the moment I unpacked them, and the love affair continues. I wondered about my sudden change of heart until I saw photos of the Kaya K90, Kaya K45 and Kaya S15 and realised that the shape of the Kaya 45 is completely different from these models. Whereas those models are all rather bulbous at the bottom—and from side-on the Kaya K90 looks decidedly pregnant—the Kaya 25 is very slender at the…

The RIAA-corrected frequency response of the Parasound Zphono XRM, as measured by Newport Test Labs, is shown in Graph 1. On this graph, the black trace is the response without the infrasonic filter and the red trace is the response with the infrasonic filter deployed. You can see that the filter’s response starts deviating from that of the main response at around 400Hz, but there’s no disparity until 200Hz, after which it’s 5dB down at 38Hz, 10dB down at 28Hz and 20dB down at 18Hz. Effectively, this means that it will effectively cut out rumble and other low frequency noises without having any significant effect on the music being played. Graph 2 shows the same response as Graph 1, but with a magnified vertical graph scale, so you can see…

The reason for that would be, as you can see plainly for yourself, is that the frequency response is spectacularly flat and incredibly extended at both ends of the audio spectrum. Let’s look at the ‘flat’ part of that first, and you can see that the overall response extends from 38Hz to 22kHz ±3dB. This is a fantastic result (though not quite matching Dynaudio’s specification of 28–25000Hz ±3dB, it’s close enough for the differences to be explained by variances in measurement techniques), but it gets even better, because if we narrow the dB variation window, the frequency response is 49Hz to 18kHz ±1.25dB! And across the region from 150Hz up to 2.5kHz, the Dynaudio Evidence Platinum’s response is almost completely flat, as you can see when you compare it against…

This is an important release as it is the first totally new release from British company Musical Fidelity since they were purchased by Vienna’s Audio Tuning last year. Despite the change in ownership, Simon Quarry, the design genius behind so many Musical Fidelity gems, continues on as Musical Fidelity’s Technical Director and Designer. The Musical Fidelity M8xi is a monster of an amplifier. Rated at 550-watts per channel it is designed to competently drive any loudspeaker in existence. The construction consists of a pre-amp with two mono-block power amps sharing the same chassis. Each component has its own power transformer and heat sinks. Stax arguably manufacture the world’s best headphones (or ‘earspeakers’ as they refer to their offerings). However Stax have always been the quiet achievers over the 80+ years they’ve been manufacturing headphones. Their advertising has mostly been word of mouth and the products are so long-lived that new models are far and few between. This system is a combination of the client’s existing equipment (Jamo speakers and Onkyo electronics) plus new products that we have supplied and installed. The Chord Electronics Huei phono stage is now available in Australia. It’s the first Chord phono preamplifier where impedance and gain selection are microprocessor-controlled. This enables 12-step impedance-matching (from 30Ω to 47kΩ) and seven-stage switchable gain—25–35dB (MM) and 48–70dB (MC). The circuitry also includes a switchable rumble filter with a –24dB/octave slope below 50Hz. All the speakers in Raidho’s TD series, the newest of which is the TD 2.2, now use a new version of this Danish company’s ribbon tweeter, as well as cones made using the company’s newly-developed Tantalum/Diamond material… hence ‘TD’. TD cones are of sandwich construction, with a central ceramic core contained within a one micron-thick layer of tantalum. Raidho designer Benno Baun Meldgaard says this modifies the characteristics of the ceramic to make it more suitable as a cone material. He says that by then adding a layer of diamond layer to the tantalum, the five-layer cone that results is even stiffer than Raidho’s own diamond cones, while at the same time being better damped than them. Rega’s new Ania Pro moving-coil cartridge is one of the world’s smallest and, at 6 grams, one of the lightest, yet thanks to a neodymium magnet system said to be unique to Rega, and low-mass coils that are hand-wound onto an iron micro-cross, it can produce an output voltage of 350μV. The Rega Ania Pro has a rhomboid pivot for its cantilever which, in turn, like many modern designs, does not use a tie-wire. I reviewed Denon’s DNP-730AE network streamer a quite few years back, but I remember it well because I ended up purchasing the review unit for my own system. Newport Test Labs ran its usual suite of tests in its acoustics laboratory, the results of which are shown in the six graphs accompanying this test report. Graph 1 is the ‘overall’ response, where the low-frequency in-room response has been spliced to the high-frequency anechoic response to give an overall snapshot of the Vivid Audio Kaya 25’s performance. You can see pretty much immediately that the response extends from 80Hz to 24kHz ±4dB or, if you want the classic ‘±3dB’ window, 90Hz to 20kHz ±3dB. This is very good performance, but you can see that the Kaya 25 reserves its flattest and most linear performance for the all-important midrange, where the frequency response extends from 125Hz to 5kHz ±1.2dB! Getting very loud, very low-frequency, distortion-free bass from a subwoofer is very easy. The only problem is the size, cost and number of bass drivers you’d need to use to do it, and the fact that the cabinet you’d need to accommodate them all would have to be so big that it would take up a good deal of the available space in the average-sized living room. The various parameters—size, cost, number of drivers and so on—can certainly be manipulated, but ultimately the final result will always be governed by the immutable laws of physics… and you can’t get around them. In February Panasonic announced that they are exiting the TV market in Australia. Apparently they felt they could no longer remain competitive under the trying conditions that so many companies in Australia are currently experiencing. This comes as a blow to LWA. B&W are very late to the party with their wireless streaming system. Sonos had this market to themselves for a decade, but since then we have witnessed the release of a plethora of brands, including Marantz’s HEOSs, Yamaha’s MusicCast and NAD’s BlueSound. B&W have unashamedly targeted the top-end of this market, taking on the likes of BlueSound and beyond. Today there are two primary sources of music for most music enthusiasts—vinyl and streaming. Interestingly, more people appear to be aware of the performance differences in turntables this time around than there were when they were popular the first time. Today most people accept that there are real differences in performance between a budget turntable and a higher-priced model. The multi-room wireless music system from the Marantz/Denon group is HEOS, which quickly established itself as one of the big four (Sonos, MusicCast and BlueSound being the alternatives). Recently the decision was made to move away from the HEOS name and for the product to be re-badged ‘Denon Home’.
