Summing your mix to mono can be helpful when making volume and EQ changes to the sounds you’re playing. In the stereo field, we have the luxury of moving each signal to the far left or right of the centre, with the use of panning. Whilst this is effective in separating the playback sounds, listening back to these changes in a mono environment only gives you the loudness balance of the sounds, and not the stereo image information. This collapsing of the mix gives you a good indication of the volume balance between each sound, and can be used as a reference to switch between mono and stereo playback to make subtle decisions and changes to your sound balance.
