Looking out from a busy viewing platform, ahead of us is the long stretch of coast where the famous seven limestone towers known as the Twelve Apostles stand. We’re surrounded by hordes of tourists from each corner of the world and, just like us, they’re here to see the linear formation of the sea stacks, six kilometres offshore. Except these crowds probably took the three-hour car route along the winding Great Ocean Road, which starts at Torquay and travels 244km to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool. That’s what separates them from our group, which walked almost 60km across four days to get here.
Walking sticks, gaiters, lunch, water, Thermoses and snacks — we go through this daily checklist before our guides, Tom and Hugo, drive us to the starting point…
