A new set of national standards and procedures, developed by the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and the Australian Logistics Council (ALC), has been approved by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to help industry participants meet Chain of Responsibility (COR) obligations and drive better safety outcomes. TOLL GROUP managing director Michael Byrne has pointed to a strategy of efficiency and cost-cutting at the accounting level as contributing to a turnaround at the Japan Post subsidiary. A free National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) mobile application has been released to enable heavy vehicle operators and parties in the supply chain to check the registration status of their vehicles in any state. Users can check if a vehicle is registered by entering the registration number or taking a picture of a registration plate before downloading the vehicle’s registration status. More than a year after its rollout, the National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) says it supports the ‘self-clearing defect’ category in the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) based on information from authorities, but is seeking wider feedback from the coalface. A defect notice can be determined by the safety risk of continued heavy vehicle use within context. A major defect applies if there is an imminent and serious safety risk, a minor defect notice applies to less serious safety risks, and a self-clearing defect notice is issued for vehicles that do not pose a safety risk. Western Australian senator Glenn Sterle has launched a broadside against the alleged exploitation of the visa system in road transport, calling on the government to respond to a road safety report released in 2017 that he chaired. AUSTRALIAN TRUCKING ASSOCIATION (ATA) chief of staff Bill McKinley appeared before the Senate recently, speaking to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee into matters of road safety. He addressed the progress of implementing autonomous emergency braking and improving driver training. In particular, the ATA suggests electronic stability control (ESC) be mandatory on new vehicles over 4.5 tonnes, and to overhaul driver training and licensing standards to end the “race to the bottom” in Australia. Victoria Police reports it has charged a 31-year-old truck driver after a double fatality in Brimin, near Rutherglen, on November 2. It is understood the eastbound truck he was driving on the Murray Valley Highway collided with a westbound car just after 9.30pm. A 37-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy from the car died at the scene, while an adult and two children were airlifted to hospital with critical injuries. CEVA LOGISTICS has a new regional managing director. Milton Tadeau Pimenta, previously head of contract logistics for CEVA in South America, takes over in January from Carlos Velez Rodriguez.
