MIGRATION IS A DANGEROUS BUSINESS. To complete their journeys, birds must dodge near-invisible building glass, stealthy cats, power lines, cars, and other hazards. Not all of them do; up to 1 billion birds die each year in the United States from building collisions alone. Fortunately, a little help from Good Samaritans and TLC from expert rehabbers can often get hurt migrants back on track.
If you come across an injured bird, the first step is to determine if it’s alive, since stunned birds can sometimes appear dead. To find out, gently move its legs, says Rita McMahon, director of Wild Bird Fund in New York City. “If the legs don’t move, the bird is dead,” she says. “But if they move, the bird’s just unconscious.”
