To start, pick ANY whole number (not a fraction).
If the number is odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, etc.):
Multiply it by 3. (x 3)
Then add 1. (+ 1)
If it’s even (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.):
Divide it by 2. (÷ 2 or /2)
Now apply the same rules to the answer you got. If it’s odd, multiply by 3, add 1. If even, divide by 2. Keep applying these rules to the new answer until you get to 1.
Suppose you start with 5. The number 5 is odd, so multiply by 3, add 1:
5 x 3 = 15
15 + 1 = 16
16 is even, so divide by 2.
16 ÷ 2 = 8…
