I knew there was something different about me when my painting of a tree with a red trunk was shown to my class of fellow nine-year-olds. Yes – I was colour blind. Like quite a few men, I was colour deficient in red, green and brown. I was born in Chesterfield, England, in 1938. I progressed though school and in 1955 passed my GCE Art. It was one of the few subjects that I enjoyed; and that was the only tuition I initially had in art. I left school and became an apprentice draughtsman at Rolls Royce Aero Engines in Chesterfield. ITALIAN ARUM FRUITS AND SNAILS  bins Down , there is a clump corner of Italian our Arum (Arum , italicum). Early one morning, after heavy overnight rain, I spied the dramatic orange fruits and the snails that had emerged from hiding to feast on their bounty. While I love using colour, I must confess that drawing is an absolute passion. It is immensely satisfying to create a work of art using simple materials that every Australian school age child takes for granted – a sheet of paper and a pencil. For this particular tonal drawing, I selected a softly marbled sheet of pale pewter-coloured paper. Because my style is precise and detailed, I prefer to use propelling pencils and 0.5 leads. This is a description of the processes and techniques I use to draw a pencil portrait. This is the sixth pencil portrait I’ve drawn. I have a connection with all of the people I have drawn previously, with my husband René being the first subject; then four close friends; and this one of my brother Phillip. Because I know each of the people well, I believe it makes the process easier … as I can tell when I have the ‘personality’ of the person on the page. I am yet to attempt to draw a portrait of a person I don’t know; but I would probably use the same techniques. MATERIALS • Pastel substrate: Art Spectrum Colorfix. • Artists’ pastels in selected colours. • Reference photographs. The subject matter is my focus. It can be subtle or dramatic; subdued or vivid. I have chosen these birds, the Eclectus Parrots, because they are at once bold and vivid – but camouflaged into their natural environment in the tropical forests. They show extreme sexual dimorphism as the male is bright green, with highlights of red and blue; and the female is a combination of rich reds and blues. Feather textures are quite specific. The challenge is to create an artistic painting which is aesthetically pleasing and true to the nature and form of the subject.
