In every issue of Artist’s Drawing & Inspiration, we give you some wonderful artists and show you their tips and ideas in order for you to enhance and further enjoy your drawing experience. Tricia Reust was born in Sydney. She attended the Newcastle Art School for more than two years, and holds a Basic Art Certificate from the Art Instruction School in Minnesota, USA. She is also a graduate with Distinction from the Open College of the Arts, Queensland. She has continued her artistic studies through classes and workshops, and gained instruction under Judith White, Reg Campbell and Max Wilks. I have been painting for almost 50 years now, but still consider I have much to learn. Like life itself, the learning process is never-ending. I have always had a passion for art and painting, and during my childhood schooldays, I used to take frequent visits to the Melbourne Gallery/ Museum, then in Swanston Street, Melbourne. I was totally in awe of the magnificent paintings, and dreamt that one day I might produce such a masterpiece. (I wish!). My childhood passion didn’t abate though! Hi I am from Rockhampton Qld. I am a late starter to Art. Only enjoying this in my late 30’s. Being creative all my life I happened to see a girl on the side of the road in Byron Bay sketching and I thought what an amazing gift to give to yourself! Took myself off to lessons in watercolour to find myself loving life art and portraits. I love pencils and sketching! I've included a sketch of my late Brother. He passed away in August of 2015. • Always use something under your hand to protect your work, as there is nothing more disappointing then a smudge mark. • Sweep away your pencil crumbs as you work as these can also lead to a mark being left on your paper. • As an artist, the most difficult thing I find is selecting a reference photo that resonates with you, and I am not a great photographer (that too is a work in progress), and one thing I have learnt is great reference photos make all the difference. • I seem to find myself drawn to dramatic photos or lots of light and shade, which is not always easy to draw, as getting the tonal values correct is the key to a nailing the drawing. I have been experimenting with a process where hard pastel is pushed into the paper with methylated spirits, and then the work is finished with pastel when that surface is dry. It is a fun process, as well as being one where the results can be visually exciting. When beginning the work, I find it is best to break down the composition into broad areas of colour, which discourages me from becoming absorbed in fiddly bits and fussy attention. Also, the base of my composition is applied using the opposite colour (on the colour wheel) to what will be the ‘end colour’ of the subject. Perseverance. My key word. If I can instil one word in anyone wanting to pursue art, it is to persevere. It doesn’t always work, it doesn’t always go your way, but keep at it, as good things can happen if you want them badly enough to work hard, and if one person can take that away from my story then I feel I have passed on some important knowledge gained through being knocked down, getting up again, brushing myself off and persevering. When an art tutor opened a studio in the mid-1990s in the suburb where Gail Higgins lives, she enrolled in the pencil drawing lessons. Though leading a very busy life at the time she absolutely loved the classes and believes enrolling was one of the best decisions she ever made. “I think I was always the first to arrive and the last to leave!” she said. • When working with Graphite pencil always put a clean sheet of paper down on your painting where you are going to rest your hand, this will stop smudging and any oil from your skin getting into your painting. • Always keep a piece of paper handy for testing your colours after mixing to be sure you have the right shade before putting it on your painting. • To remove unwanted pencil lines a nice soft kneadable eraser is the best, as it doesn’t affect the surface of the paper the way a hard eraser does.…

• Make sure your working area is tidy and free of clutter; in my case my desk, as it can be a distraction when you are working. • Invest in a pencil extender as they are quite inexpensive and save you throwing out your pencils when they get quite short. • I use a Faber-Castell sharpener that catches the shavings as it is less messy. I use the large hole instead of the small hole as I find it sharpens the Polychromos pencils exceptionally well, and I have not had any breakages since using this sharpener. Be careful not to drop your pencils as they will break inside. • Value criticism and value others’ opinions. They will see things you may not see to improve or even change the way…

• Endeavour to keep your painting as fresh and paintly as possible. Overworking can lead to a flat and uninteresting painting. • Always be aware of the composition and balance within the painting, as well as perspective and aerial perspective. Hard and soft edges also need to be considered. • Try to capture the essence of the subject first. Avoid too much detail, especially in the early stages, adding only what is necessary in the latter stages. Squint your eyes down, as this helps with the elimination process. • Consider carefully your choice of subject! This can have a lot to do with making a successful painting. • Use a mirror to check work for slanting horizon lines, tonal values, perspective, etc. • Do several thumbnail sketches before deciding on…

• If you want a more intense colour from your Graphitint pencils then wet an area of your paper first then add the colour. Be careful not too use too much pressure on your pencil to avoid tearing the paper! • Also be sure of the area you want to be more colourful as once you have applied the colour it will be almost impossible to erase. • Knowing when to call a painting finished has always been a challenge for any artist, just remember to leave something to the viewers imagination!…
