MATERIALS •  Paper: Mi Teintes Canson pastel paper. Steel grey 431. 160gsm• Generals Charcoal pencils: HB,2B, and 4B• White Charcoal• Willow Charcoal• Drawing board• Putty eraser• Blending stumps• Pencil sharpener (the best ones have a German made blade) STEP ONE First draw a grid over the photo reference. Usually I do this at 2cm squares, but it really depends on the size of the piece. (I use Photoshop and place a readymade grid onto my reference.) STEP TWO Then have a grid of the same size on a sheet of paper. I draw an outline of the subject on the grid. This is the most important stage of the process, as any mistakes that are made with the line work will affect the finished drawing. Just draw the basic details. There is no shading at this stage.…

I came across a photograph of this wonderful old bridge when I was sorting through my “prospective paintings” files. This is a compilation of photos, sketches and other reference material that I refer to when I need fresh inspiration or a particular element to add into a preliminary sketch up! I imagined the old bridge had a story to tell and even though there was no dwelling in its vicinity I decided to create one! I love this type of project, as I am able to exercise my artistic license to the fullest extent! As a small child, my earliest memories of art were: loving colouring-in books to colour in the drawings with pencils, although I wasn’t too keen on painting; my Grade 3 primary school teacher, Miss Toomey, putting one of my drawings on the wall in the classroom of which I was very proud; and winning 1st place for art and craft at the age of seven at the school fete, and not knowing that my Mother kept the certificate I received all those years ago, which I discovered after her passing. Born Brisbane Queensland in 1968, Nickolas Von Gentry grew up in the Bundaberg region of Queensland on a sugar cane farm. From an early age he was given a large box of crayons and, drawing on whatever he could find, including the walls, Gentry started to discover his passion for art. In his teenage years his parents brought him back to Brisbane where he attended school. In his mid-30s he moved to the small township of Beenleigh, located halfway between Brisbane the Gold Coast. In 2014 he celebrated 26 years as a professional artist, creating everything from portraits to menu boards. MATERIALS •  Reference photograph• Ampersand scratchboard• Craft knife (Xacto knife)• Fibreglass brush• Ampersand Black Repair Ink• Small paint brush• Cotton gloves or cloth• White graphite/transfer paper• Stylus or biro• White Stabilo Pencil• Eraser• Spray varnish STEP ONE Firstly, choose a suitable image. Make a line drawing of it, use moderate pressure and transfer the line drawing onto the scratchboard using the white graphite paper and stylus or biro. STEP TWO Beginning with the long hair on the left ear, use the craft knife (Xacto knife) and make long scratches as shown. Make sure to follow the direction in which the hair is growing. Two of the black and white copies are done on normal paper so that I can draw and make notes on them if I want to. I also set my table up to suit me. Once happy, I calculate how big the picture will be, and then start measuring how large the picture will be i.e. 1.5, 1.75, 2.0 times as big as the photo. I was born in Liverpool, England, and at an early age immersed myself in European comic books, fascinated by the amazingly detailed art. Most of my youth was spent copying my favourite artists hoping one day to become one myself. The first clue I had to having any talent at drawing was when a teacher hung one of my pieces on the school wall. A boy came up to me and said, “You didn’t draw that, your dad did”. I was only nine years of age. At the age of 17, I became a commercial artist and worked on a great number of projects for more than 25 years. I have wonderful memories of growing up in a rural area of my hometown of Bendigo. Our backyard was full of fruit trees, plums, peaches, apples and apricots. We also had some chooks. I loved feeding them and collecting the eggs. This painting is a trip back in time for me, combining our laden Apricot tree with those colourful chickens. STEP ONE On my 51cm x 61cm canvas I sketched up my design using an H grey lead pencil. Although we didn’t have a rooster I decided to put this fellow in to add extra interest to the whole picture. I was born in Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom in 1964, and spent the early part of my life wandering the fields and marshes around my home and the River Ribble, just soaking up nature. I sometimes did the odd sketch, but nothing really serious. Once a little older, I extended up to the hills and fells around the lake district, where the scenery is absolutely stunningly beautiful, and almost overpowering sometimes, no matter what time of the year you are up there. This was the beginning of my drawing. I used to sketch small pictures of different areas and subjects and of the lovely villages around the area. BACKGROUND Norman Lindsay was born on 22 February 1879, in Creswick in the Victorian goldfields, and died at Springwood, NSW at the age of ninety on 21 November, 1969. His family’s artistic talent came from his mother, a daughter of the Rev. Thomas Williams who, as well as having been a pioneer Methodist missionary in Fiji, had a considerable skill in drawing and an interest in art that prompted him to take the young Norman Lindsay to the Ballarat Art Gallery, and, as Lindsay recalled in his autobiography My Mask, to introduce him to the painting of the figure in Solomon J.
