For this demonstration, I have chosen a beautiful photo of a gorgeous nineteen year old cat called Mochko. I took the photo when he was enjoying the last rays of sunshine for the day. His is old and has health issues, and so this portrait is now treasured by his human, and will remain in his collection as a memory of his best friend. This is one of the most beautiful things that we can offer as artists - to immortalise our fur family, and people. There is a natural flow that you will find in your style ... no style is right or wrong. Born in 1945 in Newcastle, NSW, I lived at Waratah and Stockton. My grandfather Albert Sheppard introduced me to art by collecting thin sticks and showing me how to form them into outlines of boats and houses on the sand at Stockton. His brother, my Uncle Edgar, a well- known artist in Sydney, used to fascinate me, as I would watch him draw old boatsheds and wharfs along the Hunter River. The aim was to use a limited palette of blues, off white, greens and red. At all times I made a conscious effort to keep the pastels as clean as possible laying them side by side and avoiding blending. The scene is quite simple and therefore the painting technique can be kept simple. A painting like this can generally be completed very quickly. The red flowers are the purpose and feature of the painting. Art has always been a part of me. Since I was first able to hold a pencil, I have been obsessed with drawing. I am generally an analytical artist. Most of my work is meticulously planned and I take great pleasure when the end result matches the vision in my head. Most of my work contains little or no colour. I find the abundance of colour to be trivialising and empty. For me, it lacks the depth that grey-scale can offer. When I do use colour, I use it sparingly – either in muted form or amongst a grey-scale majority. I work in a variety of styles and media. Art is an absolute obsession and a part of my life that I could not be without. I have to pick up my pencils everyday and create something. I have always loved graphite and only very recently ventured into working with colour pencils, which I adore using. I also just completed my first oil painting, a miniature landscape. Even though I have not been formally trained as an artist and am solely self-taught, I am continuously learning and evolving with my skills and technique and my compulsion is to capture every detail that I see. Why do I paint? Because I was born with a tremendous passionate love of horses... and I didn’t have one of my own! Let me explain. Painting and drawing – especially drawing, has been an integral part of me for as long as I can remember and so has the love of horses – all animals but most especially horses. I was told that as soon as my tiny hands could use a pencil I was drawing horses – and I continued drawing them. I studied every picture of horses I could find, every horse that we drove past on the way to church or to town, and I read every book about horses I could get my hands on, whether fiction or the care of horses or Olympic dressage!…

I have decided to just tape the edges of my paper down with masking tape onto an old plywood cupboard door, but a 3 or 4-ply board is fine. I make sure the paper is parallel with the edges of the board as it aids in ruling grid lines accurately. Larger drawings are better stretched with water and gummed tape. If you decide to enlarge the drawing of your photo, allow for a good border with your paper. Now for my photo. Retiring from the workforce in mid-2013 provided me with the valuable commodity of free time. I had always wished to recommence my long dormant capacity for sketching at some point and now, being time-rich, I was able to pick up my pencils again. While I never received any formal art instruction, on reflection my natural interest in sketching is not surprising. At high school, my favourite subject was always technical drawing, in particular the perspective components. Additionally, I was an Engineering/Architectural Draftsman in my first 12 years in the workforce. The skills relating to the basic concepts of proportion and structure that were forged during those early years provided me with a base set of techniques that I have now been able to call upon in my current sketching endeavours.…

The subject for this demonstration was inspired by a true story, told by a local gentleman about his grandfather who had the task of training the remounts as they arrived in Egypt during World War I. Riding a quiet horse he would lead three others into the soft sands of the desert, then one by one he would ride them. The soft sand made the going much harder for the horse to misbehave, and if either of them fell it would be a soft landing. I enrolled at the South Australian School of Art immediately after leaving school, and like most part-time students, started with Object Drawing, Design and Colour followed by Antique Drawing (drawing from antique casts). Around this time I was lucky enough to get a job in the display studio with Myer Rundle Street store and my lifetime interest in art began. My career however was to be in advertising where I started as a layout man, and became a commercial artist, copywriter and account service manager. Advertising enticed me to Melbourne where I lived until returning to Adelaide 12 years ago. The RES is Newcastle’s #1 Reservoir. This underground treasure was constructed in 1882 and was Newcastle’s first subterranean drinking water supply. It was decommissioned in the early 1960s. Hunter Water has recently restored and opened the RES for public tours. I was fortunate to gain access to the RES, allowing me to collect my reference photos for my sketch. I gifted my original sketch to Hunter Water, in appreciation of permitting me access into this special part of Newcastle’s history. MATERIALS • Charcoal paper – I generally prefer Rives Heavyweight paper, but I use different types of paper for different pieces and effects. Experiment and find which paper you like best - just be sure it is acid-free and has some tooth (texture) to it. Completely smooth paper, such as printer paper, will not hold charcoal. • Black & White General’s charcoal pencils – these are for the fine detail. • White General’s compressed charcoal sticks – this white charcoal is for blending and covering areas of light. It is much harder than the White soft pastels. • White Alphacolor Soft Pastels - these are very soft and should be used over areas already covered with black pastel or the harder compressed charcoal sticks.
