My name is Frank Penfold and I have been painting on and off for approximately six years. I have a friend back in England who introduced me to painting; in fact he is an established portrait artist. He was the person who put me on the track to produce paintings of my own, and explained darks, lights, midtones and other effects to me. He would be quite critical when I would show him my early efforts, telling me to paint what I saw and not what I thought I saw. As a child, I was always drawing, colouring, knitting, sculpting with clay, basically anything arty and creative that I could find would keep me quietly amused for hours. This passion followed me into high school where I took every art subject available at the time. Unfortunately not many realistic opportunities existed for artists to earn a practical living and so my creative side was put on the back-burner for some time once I left school and entered the ‘real world’. ARTIST’S PALETTE magazine seeks to showcase the works of talented Australians producing art at a whole range of skill levels, whether they are accomplished creative people with a long history of achievements or beginners (of all ages) striving to build their identities and reach their particular artistic goals. I live in a small village called Darby’s Falls, twenty two kilometres outside Cowra in the Central Tablelands of NSW. My grandfather and his brother established the village in about 1900 and members of the family have lived here ever since. I was born here but on leaving school, I moved to Sydney to take up a teaching career which I continued for the next 44 years, both in Sydney and Brisbane. Finally I returned to take up a teaching position at St Raphael’s school in Cowra. In 2002 I retired from teaching and it was really only then that I had time to concentrate on my art. As a child I was always a daydreamer! When my brother and sisters were walking back from primary school, I was still dawdling, drawing on the iron fences with geranium flowers. From an early age I always enjoyed making things. I would see what other children had or toys in magazines that my parents could not afford, and I would have a go at making them with whatever I could get hold of - at times to the detriment of various household appliances and power tools.
