One day while having lunch with friends at an artist cottage, I saw people enjoying art lessons on the veranda. I knew instantly that was where I wanted to be, having always loved drawing and arty crafts. That was nearly three years ago; at first all that I wanted to paint was anything to do with water especially beautiful waves. My teacher encouraged me to look outside the square and do a portrait. I didn’t really think it was my thing at all, but it has turned out to be my passion. I just love seeing the face come to life. STEP ONE Selecting the board size and type, (Chroma Painting panel 25.4 x 38.1cm), I then covered it with two coats of Gesso and sanded between coats. I have always admired portrait artists who can capture the personality of their subject. To that end I have practiced painting family and friends using as a source selected photos, most of which I have taken over the years. Family and friends can be tough critics, particularly if the end result does not flatter them. So far, however, with a few exceptions, I have enjoyed the challenge. Having completed two earlier portraits of our daughter Kathy, this is my third effort, which I offer as a demonstration. MATERIALS • Primed canvas or board• Brushes (flats, all sizes) very fine round brushes• Odourless solvent• Liquin Original• Paints. Ultramarine Blue Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Indigo, Flesh Tint, Australian Grey, Terre Verte, and Zinc White. STEP ONE I begin by rendering quite a detailed drawing of the subject first in charcoal then very thin paint. STEP TWO I wash in the shadows using thin indigo to establish the values and tone and to create form. STEP THREE Add first coat of colour going from darks to lights using paints still quite thin. Allow time to dry well between each coat. STEP FOUR Second coat of colour is added using thicker paint in light areas blending edges. I started the first coat on background and dress. MATERIALS • Strathmore Bristol paper 300 series, in this case A3 size. • Rotring Rapidograph pens; 13mm and .20mm. (Edding, Pitt and Aristo produce fine line pens which could easily be used as an alternative) STEP ONE Whether I am working from a sketch made at the scene or from a photograph I always square up the page using 4, 5 or 6cm squares, depending on detailing shapes of buildings for accuracy, and in this instance I used 5cm squares. The sketch was slightly smaller and that I had also covered with squaredtracing paper. Using a pencil I prepared an accurate outline of the picture. Whenever possible, I like the subject of my paintings to have significance for me. Such is the case here. The ‘Wee Hoose’ was the birth cottage of my paternal grandfather, Jock Sinclair. My father took a number of slides of the cottage in 1982 when he visited Melby, a small village on the Shetland Islands off the northeast coast of Scotland. The character outside the cottage is Laurence Sinclair, my grandfather’s younger brother. He died the following year. I never met Laurence. The chatter of eastern Rosellas permeates the solitude of an artist’s studio through an open window on a sunny July day. They’ve settled in the winter seed grass outside – left long on purpose to attract many parrots to the garden. King parrots, grass parrots and James Hough’s favourite – the eastern Rosella. Known locally by his moniker Jim, silently he stops work, reaches for his SLR camera – ever present by his side – and begins to photograph. It’s the beginning of yet another wildlife original masterpiece – an acrylic on clayboard. After the Rosellas move on James puts down the SLR and goes back to his easel to paint. My name is Tony Loades, and I was born in Upper Sheringham, Sheringham, Norfolk, United Kingdom in 1934. In September 1947 I went to a technical school in Norwich in Norfolk, and in February 1952 I joined the Royal Air Force, for a period of five years, subsequently extending it to 25 years, where I was trained as an aircraft propulsion fitter on all types of airborne power units, including rockets. After demobilizing from the RAF, I worked for myself for 18 years as a general “Handy Man,” painting, decorating, tiling, and glazing, including some plumbing and electrics. On retiring I decided to train in computer programmes of various sorts, including teaching file and disc management.
