Regular readers of Artists’ Palette magazine may remember in Issue 96 I introduced myself as the new Genesis Oil Paints Australasian distributor. Well a year has passed since we purchased the business and what a steep learning curve it has been. I have finally finished the mural I was commissioned to do. Rain, rain and more rain saw the delay of completion and then of course what did it do at the official unveiling – it rained! Somehow it just seemed so apt that it should rain at that time. Everything is on Sam’s terms. I have used a deeper shade as I love colour and it brings his fur to life. I said Sam I would like to take your photo and he immediately turned his back on me. COPYRIGHT CONCERNS Dear Editor, Artist’s Palette magazine is always an excellent source of information on how to achieve good results in painting. I especially appreciate the articles of your Technical Editor Dalerie Patterson. Therefore I contacted her and offered a hint on how to take a snapshot from a TV program (which might be useful for other painters as an inspiration). She used the information of my experiences in one of her articles. Fortunately, art does imitate that which is beautiful and pleasurable in life. A no truer example comes from the art produced during the Edo Period of Japanese history (1620 – 1868). It is fortunate, because many of the aspects of Japanese life and culture known to the world today flourished during this period, including Kabuki theatre, the emergence of the Geisha Girl and the art of woodblock prints. It is remarkable that these and other art forms developed and flourished given the strict government and oppressive class system in place. Why does any person take on a career in Art? Well my answer to that is, you simply have no choice in the matter, you are either born creative or you’re not. Born June 29, 1958, my journey began as a young boy living in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where I spent much of my time by myself, and had a tremendous fascination with the natural world around me. Not a keen student at the time, I spent most of my time with my parrots and my falcon (bird) and wandered off as often as I could into the bush to look and study and also to draw the things I had seen. I guess not every child had the opportunity to live in three different African countries by the time they were 14 years old but I was blessed. I was born in Uganda and grew up all over East Africa. My father worked on the railways, building bridges for the push westwards and wherever a bridge needed building, we would be transferred. Consequently I lived not only in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania but I also lived in about 10 different towns or villages and attended all manner of schools. Of course, growing up over there, nature was my teacher and I’ve been passionate about wildlife ever since. I particularly relate to all things African and my life has followed a course as a result. I was born in Mackay in 1944 and at the time it was a small sugar town in Queensland, however now it is more of a mining town. My father was at that time in the Air Force and we moved to Brisbane where we lived until he was discharged at the end of the War. We lived in Brisbane for a few years then moved back to Mackay on a cane farm but due to hardships we moved into the town. I have always loved sketching and painting ever since I can remember, and at school I would find myself in trouble with the teachers and my parents for drawing in my school books.
