I was born in Cambridgeshire, in the United Kingdom. I met my Australian husband when he was on a working holiday in the UK, and he ‘kidnapped’ me and brought me to Australia in the mid ’70s. Seymour in Victoria is my home now. I work for Victoria Police as an Administrative Officer part-time; and the other part of my time, I paint! I have received no formal art training. I am passionate about depicting the Australian bush and the rural way of life. The light in this country is so clear, compared to the soft atmosphere of Europe; and the colours are strong. MATERIALS • MDF board. • Acrylic Gesso. • Sandpaper. • Sponge and old rags. • Screwdriver. • Odourless turps. • Winsor & Newton Liquin Fine Detail. • Selected brushes. • Selected artists’ oil paints. • Satin Varnish. STEP ONE I started with a board, which was prepared with two coats of gesso, sanded lightly between coats. I applied the gesso with a Number 12 flat brush. I painted a coat of Liquin over the entire board to help the oils flow and promote faster drying time. I started the sky using Sapphire Blue, Prussian Blue and Titanium White. I painted the ground using Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and Madderlake Deep. Then, using a cloth, I made a space for the road. STEP TWO Using Australian Dark Leaf Green, I added…

For this demonstration, I chose to paint a scene of the Goulburn River, Seymour. Water is one of my favourite subjects. I obtained the reference material on a warm summer evening just as the sun was going down, and the mosquitoes were coming out! I took some reference photographs, and then sat beside the river and made a few small sketches with my pastels mainly to establish what colours I would use (working very quickly before the light disappeared). In the studio I attached a sheet of burgundy Colourfix paper (made by Art Spectrum) to my easel. MATERIALS • 3mm MDF board, with a couple of coats of acrylic primer (applied with a fabric roller). • Artists’ oil paints: French Ultramarine Blue; Cadmium Red; Cadmium Yellow Pale; Alizarin; Cadmium Orange; Yellow Ochre; Viridian; Titanium White. • Bristle brushes. STEP ONE I blocked in all the shadow tones, starting with the darkest and working back into the distance. For the closest trees I used a mix of Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine Blue; for the middle section trees I used French Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red and white plus a tiny bit of yellow; working back into the more distant trees I used a cool red (Alizarin) instead of the Cadmium.
