Whilst a young pupil of PLC College in Adelaide, Bev Saxby won the annual art prize many times. She was eventually given the chance by her art teacher to paint glass slides, for projection in the theatres. At the age of 18, Bev won an art scholarship … but this went by the board after a while, as she had discovered boys! Consequently, marriage and babies were the order of the day (so to speak) for many years. When Bev got back into painting in oils she was guided by well-known artist Ernst Redl from Vienna, who had attended the Vienna Academy. Sydney was my birthplace, back in 1948. I was raised in suburban Balmain. At the age of 30, I moved from the city to the country – to a beautiful little place called Callala Bay on the south coast of New South Wales. Mount Beppo in Queensland is my home now. I am a mother of two children, and a grandmother of four. My own parents did not share my passion for art. My paintings hung on every wall in the house however … so I feel that represented acceptance. As a student I was excited by German Impressionism. I admired the style and it greatly influenced me. MATERIALS • Sanded card (26 x 20 inches).• Reference photographs from my garden.• A range of soft and hard pastels in suitable tones.• Fine sticks of vine charcoal.• Pastel paper stumps in various sizes.• Masking tape.• Baking paper. STEP ONE My selection of colours is chosen from autumn flowers in my garden. These are set up on a plate. The colours may change as the work progresses. After taping the card to a padded board, I’m ready to start. The masking tape gives a clean edge to the finished painting and makes framing easier. A quick charcoal sketch places the flowers and helps to keep them clean and fresh. STEP TWO For the background, I layer a few tones. When I’m happy with the colours I push them into the…

• Be comfortable with stepping outside of your comfort zone – by blending colours you wouldn’t normally put together. • Always take care when using a heat source on any medium. There may be fumes. Work in a well ventilated area; and if you feel any effects, stop immediately. Read instructions carefully. • Incorporate a variety of elements in your work (such as paper, rust and sand). • Wear gloves and other suitable clothing when working with sticky mediums like resin. • Work in a comfortable and clutter-free space. It is a good idea to have a wire rack under your canvas when you use the heat gun, as the canvas may sweat. Also be aware that resin does heat up on its own due to a chemical reaction. The…

MATERIALS • Reference photograph.• Canvas (30 x 40 cm).• Artists’ acrylic paints.• Impasto Gel Medium.• Palette knives of different sizes.• Spray bottle (one that produces fine mist).• Some brushes for fine work.• Varnish. I find the combination of cats and flowers irresistible. My own cat has proved a most capable model in many of my paintings, due to her propensity to do something spontaneous when presented with a novel situation. My family migrated to Adelaide from Italy when I was only three years old. My first recollection of drawing was at the beginning of primary school. Due to my language barrier, I spent a lot of time on my own – drawing and decorating my books during lunch breaks. I can still remember my first sketch of a tree. I was so proud; I didn’t think anyone could draw one better. Art was prominent throughout my school life. In high school, I would receive high grades for my assignments – only because the illustrations would impress the teachers. I would also spend a lot of time drawing at home. My name is Linda Baldock and although I currently reside in the western suburbs of Sydney, my heart will always be in my birthplace of Perth in Western Australia. I work as a freelance artist and creative product designer within the craft industry. In 2009, I began my degree in art and finished my first year as an apprentice signwriter. This is a description of the processes and techniques I use to draw a pencil portrait. This is the sixth pencil portrait I’ve drawn. I have a connection with all of the people I have drawn previously, with my husband René being the first subject; then four close friends; and this one of my brother Phillip. Because I know each of the people well, I believe it makes the process easier … as I can tell when I have the ‘personality’ of the person on the page. I am yet to attempt to draw a portrait of a person I don’t know; but I would probably use the same techniques. • I use a white plastic bucket lid as my palette. When working with acrylics, it is advisable to spray the paints often with a spray bottle of water. Once I’ve finished for the day I place a spare plastic lid (sprayed) over my palette (also sprayed) and weight them down. This provides an adequate air-tight seal and ensures my paints are still usable over the next few days. This is helpful, as sometimes I can’t replicate the exact palette of colours I mixed the day before. • Leave your colours very loosely mixed. I was born in Swan Hill in Victoria. I attended the local primary school. I later went to Swan Hill High School where I was fortunate to have an art teacher who was happy to let me explore my painting, and encouraged me to develop my own style. After I left school, I moved to Melbourne to study nursing. I did not know it at the time, but I was not destined to return to art until after retirement. I spent some time living at Nelson Bay and at Darwin; then returned to Melbourne to have a family and continue working. Singapore is the country where I was born. I now live in Mount Isa (in Queensland) where I work as a Veterinarian. And having decided that my job is not challenging (or stressful) enough, I am also venturing into full-time motherhood. I have not received any formal art training. I started Chinese Painting classes as a child (from about 10 years of age) for a couple of years – mainly, I suspect, because I had to keep up with my cousin in a bit of friendly family rivalry!
