For Fiona Groom, animals have always been a love and focus of hers. “I can remember as a child, cutting out and pasting lots of animal pictures into my scrapbooks as well as tracing and drawing my favourite animals; horses and dogs.” These animals were always treasured, along with tigers and other wild creatures. It was from these humble beginnings that a passion for creating animal life portraits developed and over the years, her painting style has truly evolved. MATERIALS • MDF board • Masking tape • Willow charcoal • Art Spectrum Colourfix pastel paper Blue Ultra • Brush • Eraser • Art Spectrum pastels: – Cool Grey – Flinders Blue Violet – Spectrum Blue Deep – Spectrum Blue Light – Phthalo Blue – Blue Grey Deep – Blue Grey Medium – Blue Grey Light – Caput Mortum Deep • Schmincke pastels: – Cobalt Blue Deep – Ultra Marine Blue Deep – Prussian Blue Deep – Greenish Blue – White – Ultramarine Deep STEP ONE Tape a half sheet of Art Spectrum Colourfix pastel paper in Blue Ultra to your board using masking tape. MATERIALS • Pure white Habotai silk fabric 10mm • Frame to stretch piece of silk • Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow silk paint • Jacquard removable water-based resist • Plastic bottle with metal tip • Watercolour brushes • Mixing plates STEP ONE Firstly, pre-wash the silk by hand. Then rinse and dry the silk until it is slightly damp. Iron the silk to set it for later. STEP TWO Prepare your painting template by drawing your own design and scaling it on paper. Use a pencil first before permanently re-tracing the drawing with a black marker. Note that the Serti technique works good for designs with enclosed spaces, since the colours need to be kept within the resist lines. In the beginning From cave paintings through the Middle Ages to the Classical period in the 1700s, most artists aimed to make their work look as realistic as possible and employed a large amount of skilled techniques to achieve that result. The best gained fame. A few standouts are Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Jan Vermeer and Caravaggio. Some schools have the same aim today, with some going to extremes. In the early 1980’s, in the hills of Northumberland, England, artist John Hersey began hand-making his own pastels. An award-winning artist using soft charcoal, Hersey loved the texture of charcoal and the boldness of the absolute black it offered. His work in black and white gave him a keen awareness of light and shadow and he wanted to translate that awareness to the use of colour but he could not find any pastels that provided the colour or performance required. Michelle Nguyen has always had a love for animals. Being one of eight children, she says she had almost every kind of pet imaginable growing up. Her biggest passion was for her horses, in which Michelle and her sister had their own horses, “Molly and Perry”. As well as a passion for animals, Michelle loved to draw. “I remember my dad used to bring home quite a lot of unwanted paper from work for my brother David and I, where we would spend ages quietly drawing.” Needless to say, Michelle’s favourite subject to draw was horses. “I just loved their arching necks and flowing manes. Perth based Ann Steer has been a professional seascape artists for 10 years. As a youngster, she remembers always being creative, having loved art at school and could always be found drawing. In particular, Ann enjoyed lino cuts and had an interest in printmaking and photography. When she left high school, Ann enrolled in a printmaking course at Perth Technical College. She says there was a lot of tuition from lecturers who were practicing artists and that it was a wonderful, creative environment. After completing the course, it would be many years before Ann started painting. Margaret dabbled in many industries, from working as a legal secretary, to then becoming the owner of a successful soft-furnishing and decorating business, Springcrest Curtains. This was a franchise that gave Margaret and her husband the opportunity to travel different parts of the US every year, to broaden their business and experience a different world. It also gave Margaret vast experience blending and matching colours in all types of fabrics and designs.
