The desire to create for Heylie has been there since day one. Born in 1982, she has delved into many forms of creativity from drawing, knitting, lead lighting, silver smithing, lapidary, watercolour and settling on acrylic painting. This creative background led Heylie to become a hand screen printer for 15 years, owning and operating a local screen printing business for ten years. This artistic process has many avenues to express creativity and make a living at the same time. It involves graphic design, which can transform from a sketch to the final printed garment. MATERIALS • A quality camera (I use a canon EOS 700D but I love using my macro for detail) • Acid free Bainbridge board • Colour waterproof inks • Tracing paper • Rotring pens 0.13, 0.15, 0.18, 0.20 • Sharp lead pencils • Ink watercolour pencils • Watercolour pencils • Rubber 2.3 and 3.8 • Ruler • Magnifying glass • Removable tape STEP ONE Choose the specific topic of your subject eg: Fungi, leaf, flower, nuts or birds. Take various photos of your topic (I am using gum nuts). For extra detail, I like to study my specimen under a magnifying glass looking for details and patterns that the naked eye misses. Tracey was born in Melbourne but relocated to Brisbane as a child in the late 1980s. Her fondest memories from this time are the countless hours spent in the family art room, drawing with her brother. Like most siblings, Tracey recalls how they were very competitive and would hold drawing competitions for their parents to judge. Her parents encouraged them to draw, with her dad’s consistent sketching of people and architecture a source of inspiration. Her mum had spent time travelling in Italy and would often talk about her love for the art and architecture of Florence and Rome. COMPOSING OBJECTS Composing Objects probes the innate creative desire to arrange three-dimensional objects. Depending on personal taste, functionality or artistic intention, objects can be brought together for aesthetic display, as a utilitarian suite, to convey meaning or to be rendered as a still life. Throughout art history, objects have been arranged in endless compositions, according to everything from shape, colour and medium to decorative style, functional quality or symbolic potency. Ordinary or ornate, historic or contemporary, objects are conduits of cultural, social and artistic values, with meaning and significance ascribed according to who is viewing them and in what context. Depending on your perspective, a singular object can have significance. As one of Australia’s finest watercolour artists, Francis McMahon boasts an impressive art career spanning over 40 years. Over this time, Francis has demonstrated the passion involved in capturing the finest moments. Born in 1956 in Warrnambool, situated on the notorious shipwreck coastline southwest of Victoria, Francis was the fifth of seven sons born to Joan and Tim McMahon. Francis’ talent for art proved strong from a young age, winning a junior art prize at the 1963 Warrnambool show. This windswept coastal town in the mid 1950’s was relatively small and the wild windy winters were a wonderful proving ground for the budding young artist. A somewhat new addition to the art world, Frances Andrews discovered her flair for drawing a couple of years ago and has not looked back since. Frances proves it’s never too late to discover new talents. Born in Wynyard, Tasmania in 1959, Frances or ‘Skeat’ as she is affectionately known, describes growing up in a large family and spending the majority of her youth in Hobart. Her father was a hardworking labourer and her mum worked in a local Catholic school, trading her time as a home economics teacher and assistant.
