Welcome to our latest issue of Artist’s Palette. First of all, we’d like to wish you all a healthy, happy and art-filled year in 2017. As many of us are about to enrol or return to our art classes and lessons, we thought it timely to show you the newest and most popular materials and equipment in our Back to School and Uni feature. We profile five fabulous artists, and we’re sure you’ll enjoy their stories and demonstrations. We also highlight some upcoming exhibitions, and bring you some inspirational works in our Artbeat and What’s On sections. Gordon Hanley was born in England, and was aged five when he arrived in Australia with his parents in 1960. Life took a number of unexpected turns (a recurring theme in Gordon’s life), that resulted in a two-and-a-half year stay in a migrant hostel followed by constant travel, that saw him attend nine schools before obtaining a university scholarship to UNSW. He studied biology, and obtained a Dip. Ed. Then he promptly joined the military, serving five years with the RAN. Returning to Queensland, he worked as a science/ maths teacher while working on his true calling in art. He later obtained a B.A in history at UQ, but in terms of art skills he is entirely self-taught, studying then practicing the techniques of the great masters. “After decades of…

All my life I have drawn and painted and, like my sister, treasured our time together with our grandmother and grandfather who were both artists in country NSW, spending hours chasing butterflies and fairies, picking up paper bark and singing, painting and drawing to our hearts’ content. I won my first art prize (a drawing book) for my painting “The Cat Looking at the King” in 3rd class, and although continuing my art throughout high school, life side-tracked me and nothing really happened with it until I started my Graphic Design course in 2011-2012, when my artistic spark was re-ignited. MATERIALS • A length of wire • A sheet of paper • A special undercoat The zenith of silverpoint drawing was achieved during the Renaissance with masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Albrecht Durer creating some of the most beautiful and recognisable drawings in the history of art. In 1560, the discovery of graphite in England and its subsequent use in the familiar “lead” pencil heralded the rapid decline of silverpoint. Unlike silverpoint, graphite drawings could be done on unprepared paper, mistakes could be erased, and graphite was much less expensive than using precious metals. • Painting from life makes you a stronger artist, and painting in the open air makes you come alive. My experiences have been exhilarating and sometimes frustrating, but never a waste of time. • Be true to yourself, and let your own passion and style develop naturally. Remember, when someone doesn’t like one of your paintings or you didn’t sell or gain an award, it certainly doesn’t mean the painting is no good. MATERIALS • Airbrush Gun (Mine is Badger 150) • Air Compressor, air hose & attachments • Canvas – 90cm x 60cm • 2b Pencil • Rubber band – to hold bottle on to airbrush gun • Sewing pin & pipe cleaners – to clean airbrush gun • Airbrush Ink (We use Opaque Airbrush Ink from Airbrush Supply Network which does not need to be mixed with any other medium for usage): – White – Red (Purple) STEP ONE I chose to leave my canvas unpainted, as I wanted to leave the canvas showing through to get the finish I wanted. If you wish to paint the canvas first, I would choose to use a white paint (I prefer house paint) so the ink sits better. Draw up your picture onto…

MATERIALS • Black cotton rag board 100 x 80cm • White Colorfix primer • ½” flat brush for applying the Colorfix • Schmincke Aero Colour Acrylic Ink in Primary Yellow and Burnt Sienna • Pastels – I use many different brands and prefer a range of hardness so that my strokes appear different in different areas of the painting. The following are a few of my favourite types: Rusty tone pastels, (particularly the Pamela Pretty set which has my favourite colours) – Terry Ludwig pastels – Schmincke pastels – Art Spectrum pastels, especially the dark shades – Conte pastels STEP ONE My first image shows the initial drawing in pink Conte pastel, which is kept very simple. DAVID HOCKNEY: CURRENT In a rare Australian appearance, in November, Britain’s greatest living artist David Hockney unveiled his world-premiere exhibition David Hockney: Current at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition features more than 1200 works from the past decade of his career, including world-premiere new works embracing new technologies, such as the iPad and iPhone. These include arresting self-portraits created on the iPad, stunning landscapes of his native Yorkshire and dramatic scenes of Yosemite National Park, hundreds of which are presented both on screens and as prints – some at almost 4m tall. ARTIST’S PALETTE magazine seeks to showcase the works of talented Australians producing art at a whole range of skill levels, whether they are accomplished creative people with a long history of achievements or beginners (of all ages) striving to build their identities and reach their particular artistic goals. This ‘Gallery’ segment provides a place to display pictures by people who may not have the means or the opportunity to be extensively featured in our magazine. While I always liked to draw and paint during my school days and as a young girl during the 1950s - 60s, I was not encouraged to pursue my interests in art. Therefore, it was not until I was married and in my mid-twenties with two small children that I rekindled my interest in drawing, first in pencil, pen, and ink. I would get up early in the morning and spend an hour or so doing some drawings before the children awoke. These times always left me feeling alive and energetic, seeing everything around me with heightened awareness of the light and the way it bounced and reflected off everything, whether indoors or observing the landscape. I would be so eager to get back to my drawings and to try…

• The best thing my sister taught me is that if you make a mistake or the airbrush splats ink onto your picture, spray gently over the affected are with white until it is fully covered then start that section again. This is the part I like most as you can always fix your work – airbrushing is very forgiving. • Some days, like with any genre, it can be a challenge, but if you stick it out it is well worth the effort. • Look for dynamic shapes to give the painting a strong structure • In the same way, look at the negative shapes that you are making as they create a vital part of the design. • Use mark making in pastel to reflect different areas and attributes you are trying to convey. Experiment with making different marks. • Try using Conte pastels to modify areas of soft pastel. They can be hatched over an area or an edge to create some wonderful subtleties. I often use them in skies or clouds to create interesting overlays and to soften edges. • If you are taking reference photos, try to make some observations to use later. Preparation on Subject Matter A painting is not just a painting to me. It is a very personal expression of sharing my intimate feelings and experience through the medium of canvas. So before l begin to paint anything, l like to be completely immersed and feel connected with the subject or theme l have in mind. With Wangka Maya, l began by exploring and researching on the significance of the ceremony, and understanding the indigenous aboriginal culture and spirituality. I look for other insights, images or examples to expand my understanding and view about the subject. I also might look at how other artists have approached this subject.
