• Watercolour paper: quarter sheet (37 x 27cm) of 300 GSM Arches cold pressed paper • Brushes: round, sizes 24, 16, 12, and 8, Rigger • Palette with large areas • Artist’s quality watercolour paints: French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red, Cobalt Turquoise, Raw Umber and Aureolin, White gouache. All paints are by Winsor & Newton • Old piece of towel to take moisture out of watercolour brushes • Box of plain tissues • Masking tape to fix watercolour paper to board • Easel or something to support the board at an angle of about 20 to 30°…

STEP ONE Firstly, read the Hints & Tips at the end of this demonstration. Trace the pattern onto tracing paper, using the fine permanent pen. Using preferred method, transfer pattern onto watercolour paper with 2B pencil. Carefully rub out any dark pencil lines. The leaves are optional. Tape onto board. STEP TWO Taking approximately half a chocchip size of paint, place Sepia and Yellow Liquid Pencils on your palette. Taking a little of each, add water to make a very pale colour. Dampen each area with water and lay down the first very pale washes, using Sepia for the rose and Yellow for the leaves, stems and sepals. This is to give a softness to the overall design. The National Gallery of Victoria is showcasing its acclaimed William Blake collection, providing the first opportunity in 15 years to see more than 100 works by Blake including spectacular watercolours, single prints and illustrated books. Especially rich in the representation of the artist’s late years, the NGV Collection boasts 36 of the 102 watercolours illustrating The Divine Comedy by Dante, the largest number of works from this celebrated series held by any gallery in the world. Dear Artist’s Palette team Thanks to you and all our sponsors, our last 2013 Dungog Annual Art Exhibition was the best to date. Our increased prize pool attracted 269 exhibits, 60 of those being in our 2 Youth Sections. We were able to offer prizes for nine categories plus an award for the best overall exhibit, attracting entries from renowned artists from as far as Queensland. Attendance on opening night (opened by our Mayor Harold Johnson and Local MP Mr. Bob Baldwin), reached over 100 and we had great sales. Our Exhibition not only offers opportunity for our local artists and youth, but Dungog is gradually becoming known to Australia’s art world, and we would love for this to grow. I have always been fascinated by the artist’s skill but did not pursue painting myself until the late 1990s. I started my working life as an electrical engineer and became involved with the personal computer industry from its inception. This developed into a role in sales and marketing management. I wanted an interest I could do in my limited time, and very quickly became hooked by watercolour painting. I ended up turning it into a new career a few years later. I have now been painting as a professional artist for the past nine years. Luckily my paintings quickly found a ready market with hundreds of paintings sold both locally and overseas. • Make sure you mix enough paint to easily cover the area of painting you are working on. If you have to stop halfway through a wash and mix more paint you will most likely end up with a muddy mess as your initial wash will have dried. • Think through the steps you are going to take with your painting before starting. • Concentrate on getting your tones right and not so much on colours. • The most important ingredient in watercolour painting is “water.” Understand what it does and how it flows and you will create much nicer paintings. • After water your next most important ingredient is time! • Transferring patterns can be done several different ways e.g. free hand design in pencil, pattern can be of your own choice; rub a 6B pencil onto the back of the pattern, then using a stylus or old Biro, trace onto paper; use a light box; you could even use a window. • Cover dry work with a paper towel to keep clean where possible. • Use small quantities of Liquid Pencils at a time, as they are very economical. • Even though Liquid Pencils will dry, they are rewettable. • Use the very versatile dagger brush that best suits what you want to do e.g. cover a larger area with longer edge; tip for fine lines; dragging down length wise for pulling veins. • Depending on the paper used,…

• Learn to draw. Then practice. Go along to life drawing every week to keep your drawing skills honed and ready for action. As artist Barry McCann says, “If you can draw it, you can paint it”, so stop putting off that hard and rigorous work and just do it — no excuses. Drawing better pushes your painting practice ahead faster than anything else. • Be brave. Fear of failure stops many people in their tracks, but you don’t have to be one of them. It’s only paint, after all. • Learn colour theory, and apply it in your paintings. Limiting your palette is one the biggest improvements you can make in your work. WHAT MAKES US WHO WE ARE? A new Sydney exhibition explored the modern meaning of culture and identity in Asian art. With the support of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO), Sydney-based independent arts organiser Red Dose presented its second major group exhibition entitled ‘I Was Therefore I Am’. This exhibition of 12 contemporary artists was on view from 3- 17 April at Hong Kong House located on 80 Druitt Street, Sydney. ‘I Was Therefore I Am’ explores the relationship and transition between the past and the present and how individuals are culturally shaped by places and memories. I was born in Benalla, north east Victoria, but actually lived in a very isolated country area called Toobullup, near Tolmie. Our family moved to Benalla for a short time before moving to Thoona; my Dad running the Post Office. From there we moved to Meeniyan in South Gippsland. Both my parents came off the land and Dad had always wanted to raise poultry, so when the opportunity arose, he moved us back to the north east to live in Wangaratta, where he became a poultry farmer. While living in the country, creativity was found in an age of self-sufficiency, and at an early age I learnt to sew and cook, and also watched and learned as my family grew vegetables, baked, preserved fruits and jam, raised chickens, milked a…

Canvases I prefer linen, stretched onto 38mm stretcher bars. Inking on boards doesn’t allow us to manipulate the flow of ink by depressing or raising the surface in places, which are important tricks. Also, the weight of the texture paste and wet ink on the surface creates a slight depression, which helps keep the ink on the canvas, rather than all over the floor. Brushes and knives I love fan brushes, because they keep my mark-making loose. I have a vast range of palette knives, because having the right knife is paramount to getting the smooth mark you want, at the size you need, in the place you had in mind. I was born into a music-filled household in the early 1950s as my Mother was a popular piano teacher, and from the age of five years and onwards my world consisted of nothing but piano music. So it went on through my school years and through my Primary Teaching time and into marriage. There were many times as a child though that I sat and drew and became increasingly frustrated as I could never get out onto paper what I could see so clearly in my mind’s eye - so music it was and art would have to wait for several decades.
