At a grass routes level our local agriculture shows here in W.A. and I assume similar shows through- out Australia play a great part in encouraging and often keeping alive crafts and skills that may other wise fall into decline with out being given this type of opportunity to showcase their work through events like these. The annual Wanneroo Show with 10,000 to 20,000 visitors per year, has a history going back to the turn of the last century, our show like many others of its kind these days celebrates local talent in many ways but was originally started to showcase the agricultural products of the area. Born in Brisbane I950, Paul attended the Brisbane College of Art and worked in the fashion industry for 10 years before becoming a full-time artist in 1980. l started drawing and painting from an early age, like most children, and the interest continued into my teen years. After l finished school l enrolled at the Brisbane College of Art and spent three years learning very little that would be of use to me in the years to come. With family responsibility and the need to make a living, until the age of 30 I worked in the daytime and spent my nights working on my art. Born Brisbane Queensland in 1968, Nickolas Von Gentry grew up in the Bundaberg region of Queensland on a sugar cane farm. From an early age he was given a large box of crayons and, drawing on whatever he could find, including the walls, Gentry started to discover his passion for art. In his teenage years his parents brought him back to Brisbane where he attended school. In his mid-30s he moved to the small township of Beenleigh, located halfway between Brisbane the Gold Coast. Fredrix Oil Primed Linen Canvas Oil Primed linen was one of the first surfaces developed for ‘modern’ day painting. For hundreds of years, oil painters have recognised that traditionally prepared oil-primed Belgian linen is the ultimate support for their artwork. With the advent of Acrylic and Watercolour paint along with the development of faster production methods for less expensive cotton fabric canvas, the use and popularity of traditional Oil Primed Linen steadily declined over the past 50 years. Now, with the introduction of cheap, poorly constructed, non-archival canvases, many oil painters are now turning back to the original (and best) painting surface for oil painting. For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed drawing and painting, but it is only in recent years that I have had the opportunity to concentrate on improving my art skills and extend my interest in art to working with charcoal and pastels. Coming across Artist’s Palette magazine at my local newsagent has been most beneficial in helping me and encouraging me to try new mediums. STEP ONE I drew the main shapes onto the paper, adding washes for the sky and clouds using Winsor Blue, French Ultramarine, and Raw Sienna. STEP TWO I painted the foreground washes using Aureolin and Cadmium Red. Trees were added using various mixtures of Hookers Green and Burnt Sienna. The foreground grasses were painted with Hookers Green Light with a touch of Burnt Sienna. FINAL STEP The trees and foliage had various glazes applied for shadows using French Ultramarine and Alizarin Crimson to highlight the sunlight on the hillside. DERIVAN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY Derivan, manufacturer of the iconic Matisse brand of professional artist acrylic paint, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. It started 50 years ago with a few mates chatting over a beer. They realised that there was a need for safe, non-toxic artist paint for use in schools. It may seem an obvious idea now, but at the time art teachers had very little choice when it came to child-safe paints. A few more ideas later and the company Vynol Colour was born. STEP ONE After deciding that the layout of the painting will be two-thirds sky to one-third land, I paint in the sky with a mix of Cobalt Blue and Paynes Grey with a touch of White. To the lighter area of sky, I add White to the still wet paint. The grass area is painted with Sepia and a touch of Burnt Umber. STEP TWO While I have a preconceived idea of what I want to achieve, I am prepared to work over the whole sky area, adding and removing colour in an attempt to create volume and movement. I was a very, very late starter with painting. For all the years I lived and worked in London it was something that other people did, not me. When I went on holiday I would take pencils and paper and sometimes produce drawings that were just about alright, nothing special. Then on a two week holiday in Cornwall on the south-west coast of England, my husband bought me a small box of watercolours. Now it is hard to believe that something so small would have a lasting significance on our lives. It was the beginning of a life-changing experience. Being the last one born in a family of six siblings, I always wanted to paint people’s faces but I just did not have the confidence. I was very influenced by my brother Allen, who was a very talented screen printer, and at high school I received an (A+) for graphics. I started painting for relaxation in my late twenties after a diagnosis of Repetitive Strain Injury and Carpal Tunnel surgery from typing and other repetitive jobs from my workplace. When I first started art, I had three teachers, including Carol Boothman, who was a mentor and the president of the Waverly Art Society in Victoria.
