Welcome to our latest issue of Artist’s Palette. It’s the time of year when many of us are about to enrol or return to our art classes and lessons, so we thought it timely to show you the newest and most popular materials and equipment in the market in our Back to School and Uni feature. We profile five wonderful artists, and we’re sure you’ll be inspired with their stories and demonstrations. We also highlight some upcoming exhibitions, plus bring you some fabulous artistic works in our Artbeat section. We love to showcase the artistic works of talented Australians, from enthusiastic beginners to accomplished artists, so if you’re keen to be showcased in the magazine, please send in your submissions to us. ARTIST’S PALETTE magazine seeks to showcase the works of talented Australians producing art at a whole range of skill levels, whether they are accomplished creative people with a long history of achievements or beginners (of all ages) striving to build their identities and reach their particular artistic goals. This ‘Gallery’ segment provides a place to display pictures by people who may not have the means or the opportunity to be extensively featured in our magazine. When painting images which include a figure, it is nice to use someone you know and admire, and for whom you feel a lot of warmth. It takes a great deal of time and focus to create a painting and when working on the figure included in the piece, you are really immersing yourself in their energy, so it can be a really nice way of celebrating a connection or appreciation that you have for another person. Choosing an individual who you have a connection with as your reference can also result in your own subconscious emulation of this warmth emerging from the finished painting.…

ARTIST’S HINTS AND TIPS

• Always use barrier cream to protect your hands – pastels really dry out your skin.• Always use two towels or cloths when working with pastels. One dry for wiping excess pastel from your fingers when blending, and one damp cloth for cleaning your hands.• Place your pastels in a dish of rice to keep them clean as you work.• Break your new pastel into either half or thirds before using. This allows you to use the side of the pastel for broad strokes and it will also retain an edge at either end for fine lines.• I use the edge of my little finger and a light backwards and forwards motion to blend. I also lift my finger off the paper often; this helps to keep the colours clean. I also use the pad…

• Many artists are put off by a blank canvas. Making that first stroke can be intimidating, just as facing a blank page can be an obstacle for an author. I approach painting much more simply. • The very first step in the process for any representational artist of course is to have a concept or image of what it is he or she wishes to paint. If I don’t have the subject directly in front of me (and I don’t always find myself in the middle of Broadway in New York or the Grand Canal in Venice) I have copious sketches and photographs I’ve taken to rely on. • Artists throughout the last century increasingly relied on photography for inspiration – not to copy but as a starting point.…

• Never use black – mix your own colours.• Use warm colours first and add cooler colours afterwards.• Experiment, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, they can sometimes be the best part of a painting.• Engage with the work during the process and make decisions based on what is in front of you, not from a photo or sketch.• Only use photos and sketches to help when lost or needed as a guide to get back into the work.• Always use fat layers over lean layers.• Find your voice through the work.…

The Visual Storyteller

Tara Spicer is a visual storyteller. Her paintings have been described as “deeply whimsical”, where imagination and deep thought entwine. Some of her works portray moments of lament and bewilderment while others invoke a great sense of inner strength or insight. Tara has a beautiful gift for immersing the viewer into a world of Allegorical Surrealism. Her paintings engage us with their dainty tea cups - a symbol of the artist’s own for “taking time to connect with friends and to be kind to oneself”, along with other allegorical symbols of the artist’s own such as feathers, top hats, nests and trees, each with their own deeper meaning and symbolism. My art career mainly grew alongside my children. That’s not to say I wasn’t interested in art. I still have pictures I drew when I was 10, so my interest in art began at an early age. But other interests became my focus, I put this down to the fact my art teacher in Year 8 at high school told me I had no understanding of art and should pursue other interests. Life took over and my interest in art was packed in storage. When my children were born my life slowed down and I began to see the world in a more refined way. I have always enjoyed drawing, painting, and creating. As a child, rainy days never bothered me – this was an opportunity to stay inside, happy for hours with my pencils and paper. To this day I can still recall the smell associated with opening a brand new, wooden box of pencils. Bliss! Even now, many years later, there is still a sense of excitement associated with beginning to develop a new drawing or painting. I have always been creative. Prior to Vincent, great artists were generally part of a long tradition of apprenticeship and patronage; admired, clothed, fed and feted by royalty, nobility, merchants and the church. They were not generally on the fringes of society but right at its very heart. They were the pop stars of their era. Adoration of Colour

Born in New Zealand, Jacinda Bayne began painting as a child. At the age of four she remembers being given paint for the first time and realising that she could mix colours to express the way she saw things. Jacinda was also inspired by her Grandfather, watching him paint scenes of Central Otago in watercolour and oils. Inspired and fascinated by light, colour and shape found within the landscape, Jacinda continued her love of art through school, winning many local art prizes. Recognising her early talent, people at her high school, Ashburton College, purchased her work for its private collection. SEASON 14 Each December Stills Gallery in Paddington, NSW, features a show of selected Stills artists. The theme for Season 2014 is continuity and divergence. There are 12 artists with a highly diverse range of practices that reflect both the history (of the gallery and of photography itself) and the diversity with which photography has developed in unprecedented ways over the last 20 years. Steven Lojewski’s series Populace was one of the first exhibitions at Stills when it began in 1991. These black and white images in the tradition of documentary street photography look as fresh as the day they were first seen.
