Genesis is a comprehensive book on the Guatemala Highlands, a lush and densely populated region in southern Guatemala inhabited predominantly by Indigenous people of Mayan descent. Juan Brenner explains in his studio in the capital: “I was able to photograph and document this area for five years. It's essentially an archive. “From my first reading of Samuel Gallet's ecological fable, The Innocent Land, I felt a profound connection with my own work. The book discusses a potential rebirth and the real and imagined alternatives to dominant catastrophism and ecological destruction. The concept of a fleeing territory and fragmented memory unfolds in his writing just as it does in my photographic exploration. Later, Samuel disclosed to me that the memory of my images had accompanied him throughout the writing of his text. With this series, I aim to continue our shared reflection on the invisible and the unspeakable, on what is revealed and what remains elusive. “For my project, Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, I collaborated with dancers as performers and interpreters of inner movements. Their refined body language and ability to make the unsaid visible are the driving inspiration for my work. “The months before my mother died, she asked what I wanted to keep of hers. Everything I mentioned was mostly taken by sisters or grandchildren. Amid absurdity and laughter, we settled on a robe I didn't recognise. Made of a silky cotton fabric and prettier than my Mum's usual style, she said it was for hospital visits. Her no-nonsense manner would not elaborate. This was to become my heirloom, a special robe that she set aside to feel respectable for other people.
