In 2019, Mauro Curti returned to Piemonte after ten years of travelling to Central and South America and Spain, where he now resides. “At the age of 33. Having lived in a small hamlet of only 3000 inhabitants, I left my comfort zone and started to travel. It felt like a necessity to start this project, like an autotherapy to know more about myself, trying to establish a connection with the territory, myself, and my family for the first time.” The medium photography allowed Curti to block the walls between him and the world outside. Visual art, for me, is not just a craft, a profession and a set of skills; it is primarily a philosophy, lifestyle, way of thinking, self-development and movement forward. There can be no stops, no backward direction, only forward and upward. Visual art helps me to know myself and the world. My visual works are a search for my reflections, feelings and emotions in space, nature, people, lines and forms, and in my conversation with myself. I ask myself questions, look for answers, and visualise them. Just outside the Dutch village of Angeren, nine adults, five children, six sheep, many chickens and a dog live together in one house: intentional community De Brouwketel. The ‘Brouwketelaars’ live a self-sufficient and sustainable life. They grow their own fruit and vegetables, make yoghurt, and bake their own bread. They also consume as little water, electricity and plastic as possible while heating their house with firewood from the land. I have been photographing the residents of De Brouwketel for more than five years. I visit once every two months and often stay the night. The Last Snowball expands on the joyful image of a snowball to consider the effects of climate change on the Swiss Alpine environment. I use entangled experimental image processes to consider the realities and challenges climate change poses to our thinking. I turn to the nonhuman—to the photographic, to the fir developer, to webcams—and listen to what it says about my photographs and our relationship to the landscape, especially as the winters get warmer. It is increasingly clear that we need to listen to the land, as James Bridle suggests, to find new ways of being that break with the binaries of current thinking. After his book about the farmers in Cuba, Campesino Cuba, Sharum undertook a project in his native country. He wanted to work similarly, travelling around and meeting people. He focused on the so-called flyover zone of the United States, the vast land between the east and west coasts, where mainly farmers and labourers live. “This large section of the United States has been written offpolitically, socially and culturally for decades.” The subject of the book Spina Americana, the first part of a coming trilogy, was also born from years-long concern about America’s social division.
