Portfolio Interview From a young age, the community expects young girls to get a husband and have children. But they have dreams and need a supportive and empowering environment to grow. Lee-Ann Olwage worked in her series, The Right To Play, with schoolgirls from a non-profit organisation that leverages education to empower girls in Kenya. Featured My parents used to mock me whenever I told them I had visited someplace in France, not realising that we had visited the same place several times during my childhood. I have always found it highly frustrating how easily the most beautiful places, people and events slip from my mind. I comfort myself with the thought that as long as I write about it or capture it in the photo, there is always a way to recover the experience. Featured The symbolic meaning of ‘Ouroboros’ is the concept of eternity, cyclicity and rebirth. Ouroboros is a snake biting its tail with no beginning or end, suggesting an eternal cycle, seemingly motionless but in continuous movement. My work wants to represent this multitude of alternative dimensions of our lives. It falls within the plane referred to as the astral or a mode of being in the immaterial nature. Our world and everything contained, from snowflakes, maple trees, and shooting stars to spinning electrons, consists of spectral projections from a level of reality beyond space and time. Featured I photographed abandoned, old, dusty household items in the hallways of my neighbourhood. These secretive spaces contain objects that hold the memories of their owners. My works engage with the situation of ordinary people involved in the wave of consumerism. The discarded and displaced items in the hallway offer us a glimpse of the material life of common urban dwellers in big cities during the process of commercialisation, allowing us to experience their fast-changing states of life. The clutter that spills out from the private spaces of individual households into the public hallway serves as a poignant metaphor, evoking images of dried fish stranded on the beach of desire when the great tide is on the ebb. In my project Identity, I delve into personal reflections and visually explore Ukrainians’ self-identity. This process is complex and multifaceted, constantly changing and evolving. The war acted as a catalyst, forcing many to reassess their national identity and understand its importance. During this pivotal time, I turned to collage as both an artistic medium and a way to balance my emotions. Inspired by avant-garde artists who boldly pushed the boundaries of the ordinary, I create new forms and structures. Collage allows me to play with colours and shapes and express my feelings. Working with archival materials and meditating, I find invisible threads that connect me to history. Portfolio Interview Growing up after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Parisa Azadi migrated to Canada with her parents as a young child. The family longed for a better life as Iran went through a dark time in the mid-1990s after the exhausting Iran-Iraq war. “I grew up in a repressive social environment. We had to live through the aftershock of the Revolution, which radically changed daily life for Iranians. We lost many of our personal and social freedoms overnight. Featured The Lines of Life series was born out of my complex emotional experiences and depression. At that time, the only place where I felt calm was the forest.
