The Inner Garden features photographic collages using flowers as the primary material. The pieces reflect the subconscious desire for beauty in the heart and explore the concept of an “inner garden” as a place of solace and peace amidst the chaos of the outside world. Through this series, I aim to convey nature’s delicate and ephemeral beauty and inspire viewers to appreciate and cultivate the inner beauty we all possess. The use of floral imagery serves as a metaphor for this inner beauty. My hope is that these works will inspire viewers to look inward and find their own inner gardens. I began this series during the first Covid wave to stay connected in a period of profound isolation. Photographing daily made me feel balanced and grounded. Seeing trees and plants that survived illness and physical harm gave me the strength to continue. Nature reminded me existence is interconnected and the energy of dying lifeforms supports future growth. My images include traces of what was, things still hanging on, the effects of climate change and human impact, and the cycle of life while celebrating the commonplace since all life is precious. I am drawn to burls, scars, and physical disconformities that evoke a history of experiences. This series is about our longing for Paradise. These Edenic images symbolise the state of mind, the feeling of being whole and connected, that we are striving for on our path of life, directed by our desires and aspirations. I illuminate the archetype of tropical paradise and how it feels like to walk barefoot, to be immersed in lush abundance with all senses, the scent, the sound, the light and its beautiful reflections dancing on water that seems to be present almost everywhere. It is a meditation about light and shadow, contemplating that one would not exist without the other, like yin and yang, a praise of shadow and all the shades in between, reflecting the facets of life itself. In my youth’s wide-open Dutch Frisian landscape, the only tension to be found was in the sky. I spent many hours staring out of my bedroom window, gazing at the stars in the heavens above. During the day, I strolled across the meadows and learned that there is wonderment in the tiniest and the biggest. Gravity Fields is about this wonderment and the questions about the origin and brevity of life. The series investigates the link between the vast and the microscopic: the universe, the sky and the creatures that move in it and form the ‘bridge’ as it were, between heaven and earth. The arrival of the Metaverse, a virtual world envisioned as a 3D model of the internet, has prompted investment in the development of the body and fashion within virtual space. The Metaverse could potentially become an alternative reality where life can be spent digitally. As the digital and physical worlds continue to merge, the boundaries of the physical body will be further explored and may even undergo unrecognizable changes. This leads to ‘disembodiment’, the alienation from our own bodies. It is a transformation that renders the body no longer itself. By stripping the body and clothing of their familiar context, I open up the possibility for transformation – when something becomes something else. A Retrospective Imogen Cunningham J. Paul Getty Museum Celebrated American artist Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976) enjoyed a long career as a photographer, creating a large and diverse body of work that underscored her unique vision, versatility, and commitment to the medium. An early feminist and inspiration to future generations, Cunningham intensely engaged with Pictorialism and Modernism; genres of portraiture, landscape, the nude, still life, and street photography; and themes such as flora, dancers and music, hands, and the elderly. Inspired by the enlightened perspective of 19th-century naturalist Alexander Humboldt, I photograph our well-trodden landscape as though it’s never been seen. I reflect on our evolving relationship with a fundamentally changed nature. I use artificial and coloured lighting in the landscape to render a semi-fictional world of landscape artefacts (rocks, flora, etc) and images of Humboldtlike characters who measure earth’s phenomena, looking for evidence of the Afterlife. In themes of colour and abstraction, Afterlife celebrates the ambiguous territory between the imaginary and documented. Afterlife visualizes future landscapes by thinking about how someone from the past would look at the landscape now, melding the actual world with the fictitious. Humboldt came to know nature mainly through acts of observation, whereas my approach uses interventions with a camera and artificial lighting. My…
