In issue #5 of Artdoc Magazine, we bring stories that treat many different aspects of human life and its cares. The American photographer Gregg Segal made a visually expressive contribution about the food we eat, focusing on children. Žilvinas Kropas’ work takes us to the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century when in the search for a photographic media and an authentic language for photoart, the separation of photography from fine arts was being manifested. The search for an authentic language was performed in two ways: the first, an optical/mechanical experimentation, attempting to produce a perfect image projection on the surface; the second, chemical, that would allow to preserve the image ‘caught’. Žilvinas Kropas, on his part, seems to be able to practice both of those methods. He bravely delves into the essence of photography encoded in its very title, which suggests mere chance, free from any preconceived human wishes. In one photograph, we see a woman dressed in a wide, red dress, talking to a truck driver. In another, we see a veiled woman in white clothing, with a rosary in her hands, and in yet another image, a woman dressed as a mermaid lies on the beach. All of these photos depict the Muxes of Oaxaca, a region in Mexico. Nelson Morales states: “The Muxes of Oaxaca are considered the third gender of Mexico. They do not define themselves as homosexuals; they have surpassed this idea. They are rather seen as a mixture of both genders, and are in a constant search for beauty.” Whereas many homosexuals are not accepted by Mexican society, the majority of muxes are accepted by their families. Segal conceived the project Daily Bread as a logical sequence of an earlier project called Seven Days of Garbage. “That was shot from the same perspective. I asked people to save their garbage. I photographed it as a way to raise awareness about consumption and waste. While shooting the garbage, I noticed that there was an awful lot of packaging and in particular packaging that comes with the food that we eat.” For Daily Bread, he chose to use children because eating habits start at a young age and last a lifetime. Daily Bread: What Kids Eat Around the World Gregg Segal As globalization alters our relationship to food, photographer Gregg Segal has embarked on a global project asking kids from around the world to take his “Daily Bread” challenge. Each child keeps a detailed journal of everything they eat in a week, and then Segal stages an elaborate portrait of them surrounded by the foods they consumed. "The concept of family has always been a factor that restricts my freedom and prevents me from being myself. Based on this personal approach, I focused on all aspects of obligations and responsibilities arising from the family concept. I tried to open new areas by deforming or erasing the elements and the people that directly or subconsciously gives me discomfort. My research starts from a personal perspective, and then it gets wider towards the collective experiences. “Gaps is a project about social interactions and technology addiction. The “gaps” are metaphorically represented by gradients as doors to another dimension. Photography could be produced anywhere; what counts are the subjects and their decontextualization. Racism is a global issue. There is covert discrimination that takes place subtly. Racism can be found openly in our society, in the workplace, in politics and on the street where George Floyd’s last words were: “I can’t breathe.” Racism goes against all human rights. It is frustrating that discrimination started centuries ago and got stuck in the system. Who and what came up with the concept that there are differences between the skin colour? When do people wake up and see that we are all equal human beings? Serrano became famous for his controversial artworks, of which the most well-known is his depiction of a statuette of Christ submerged a glass of urine. The photo caused a scandal in 1989. He was threatened and reviled for it, but the photo permanently put him on the map, as an important contemporary artist. His recent work, however, is not so controversial, and Serrano explains his position on this: “Piss Christ was created as a work of devotion. I am a Christian. I was born and raised as a Catholic.
