The origin of Olaf’s artistic approach to photography is the versatility of his sources of inspiration in his early years: the music of David Bowie, the visual arts of Andy Warhol, among others, the painting by Yves Klein, and the Italian and German film, by Visconti and Fassbinder. The photo series Circle is a personal story inspired by emotional events that Jung S Kim experienced in her childhood. She was seven years old when her parents divorced, after which she was forced to move to live with relatives. She ended up with her aunt, a shaman who kept Buddhist objects on her altar and paintings of folklore scenes. “I remember how my grandfather, Giuseppe, used to tell me stories about his youth and the mountains of his homeland and how, when caught by the German troops, he managed to escape and walked back home from Germany. I can still feel, through his memory, the strong sense of belonging to the place when he described the happiness to see again those mountains from far. cultural heritage In this project, I re-discover parts of my cultural heritage, portraying the different facets of the life of mountain villages in between the Italian and Slovenian borders. Erwin Olaf | I AM In honor of Erwin Olaf’s sixtieth birthday, Erwin Olaf: I Am presents the first comprehensive survey of his work, bringing together his earliest images in black and white with his now-iconic color work, including selections from his most recent and heretofore unpublished series shot in Shanghai. This chronological presentation traces the evolution of the artist from cheeky provocateur to royal portraitist, as well as the refinement of his unique vision and stylistic panache over the last four decades. Interspersed among the various series is a wry, incisive commentary by Olaf on the contexts of and inspirations for his work. “I’ve been craving getting wildlife into my work for a long time. Thematically, it is a continuation of ideas I’ve had in mind for years and explored in my previous work. I always look to nature to restore a sense of grounding and calmness, and I find this in wildlife as well. With my repertoire, I explore themes about the human condition, namely personal identity, emotional intelligence, relationships, and emotionality. I find mindfulness in these creatures and vast landscapes. I also genuinely care about nature and wildlife conservation, and I want to draw more attention to conservation efforts. I hope to bring these works into people’s lives and on collector’s walls. It will encourage a conversation about conservation, and how it is not only good for the environment but for…
