Modernism remains contemporary, especially in a portion of the Hollywood Hills. Within the space of what might measure only a few blocks, but which here is best measured in the number of hills, is an enclave of several houses by architect John Lautner (1911–1994), including this notable one from 1953, known as the Bergren Residence for its original owner, jazz guitarist Ted Bergren. It embodies the best features of Modern architecture and the way Lautner uniquely expressed it: an open-plan form, a distinctive shape, a butterfly roof, and a restrained palette of materials that includes redwood, glass, brick, and concrete.
