“ANCIENT NUBIA: Art of the 25th Dynasty from the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston” will open this month at Atlanta’s High Museum. THE MCCORMICK Gallery in Chicago will present the solo exhibition “Maurice Golubov: Rebel of the Fourth Dimension” from June 1-Aug. 4. Golubov was a Jewish Russian immigrant who came to the United States as a child with his family, arriving in Brooklyn in 1917. While his Hasidic parents expected him to become a rabbi, training him in Jewish mysticism and theology, Golubov instead began studying art at a young age, taking classes at a Jewish Settlement House and then becoming an apprentice at a fashion house. During this time, he was introduced to the National Academy of Design, where he studied for four years and fell in with a group of New York artists including Max Weber and Raphael Soyer. KEY WEST’S Gallery on Greene will present paintings by Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist Alfred D. Crimi during the month of June. Crimi, who was born in Italy but emigrated to the United States in 1910 at the age of 10, studied art formally at both the National Academy of Design and at the Beaux-Arts Design Institute in New York. After developing an interest in Italian art, he traveled to Rome to study fresco and encaustic painting. During the Great Depression, Crimi like many artists found work and commissions through President Roosevelt’s WPA program. The first was a mural at the Key West Aquarium, completed in 1935, depicting fishermen unloading their catch. When we see a painting, we—the well-read viewers, the lovers of aesthetics—have been taught to move past simple subjective responses and to tease apart meaning. With the quilt, nostalgia seeps in. Seen in a domestic context, we recognize its role as a source of warmth and decorative beauty. “SERGE CHARCHOUNE: The Early Years,” a museum-style exhibition of works by the Russian-born, French painter will be on view at New York’s Rosenberg & Co. through July 11. This is the first posthumous solo exhibit of the artist’s work in New York, and features 36 pieces drawn from his early artistic period. Charchoune defied easy categorization during his career, as he drew from Cubism, abstraction, and representation throughout his life. Concerning the years between 1916 and 1930, this show explores Charchoune’s period of experimentation while he navigated the influences of the European avant-garde. By 1916, he was living in Barcelona among the many other artists who had fled to Spain as World War I began. SEATTLE’S FREDERICK Holmes and Company – Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month with a new exhibition by photo-collage artist Marybeth Rothman. Titled “Marybeth Rothman: Recent Observations, and Conjectures Near Madaket Road,” the show features photo collage with encaustic paintings created from vintage and found photographs. Rothman first exhibited her work at the gallery in 2014, and has since found an enthusiastic audience of collectors in the Pacific Northwest. One of her portraits, Syringa (2022), was a finalist in the Smithsonian Institution’s 2022 portrait competition and was displayed in the museum’s Portrait Gallery for several months. HERITAGE Auctions will host their Fine European Signature Auction on June 9, with the leading artwork on offer being an oil on canvas by the French master William Adolphe Bouguereau. Additional works for auction include an impressive selection of French Modernist paintings, and several Nordic landscape paintings. As Marianne Berardi, Director of European Art for Heritage, says, “The sale is as wonderfully diverse in terms of subject matter, media, national schools, scale, period and price point as in the past [European art sales].” The sale is curated from two private American collections, with landscape and genre subjects drawn from the estate of actor Eugene Iglesias, and Nordic paintings from a private Colorado-based collector. “ONCE Upon a Time,” an exhibition of mixed-media works by the pop artist Greg Miller, opens in June at The William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica. Miller grew up in northern California, and when he was young his grandfather would take him on road trips to ghost towns surrounding Lake Tahoe. There, the young Miller would explore the abandoned homes that were still standing—many of which were decorated with magazine and newspaper ads and articles, in a stark contrast to the decay they adorned. This contrast influenced Miller’s style and his interest in advertisement, comic books, pulp fiction, and other artifacts of pop culture. IN THE POPULAR imagination, the art of Morocco likely provokes thoughts of Zillij tilework or artisanal leather goods. Others may picture the Orientalist fantasies of Eugène Delacroix or Henri Matisse. A new exhibition at Tate St Ives, “Casablanca Art School,” seeks to revise such a limited vision of Moroccan art and presents a welcome introduction to work produced at the Casablanca Art School (CAS) from 1962–1987. Exhibition curators track the impact of five innovative CAS instructors on the work of their students and contemporaries. Morocco became a French protectorate with the 1912 signing of the Treaty of Fes. In establishing political control, the French instigated a stratified population with native Moroccans living in the existing medinas, while French and European residents lived in new settlements known as the “villes…

LOUIS STERN Fine Arts, in association with Addison Rowe Gallery, will exhibit the Modernist works of New Mexico-based artist Raymond Jonson in Raymond Jonson: Medium and Message. While he began as an abstract painter, in the 1930s Jonson started abandoning abstract forms and figures for pure explorations of color and mood. In these “absolute” paintings, as Jonson called them, he was able to transcend any political, social, or economic references and provide a view directly into his spirit. During this time, he co-founded the Transcendental Painting Group, which was a group of artists with similar objectives who understood painting as a form of spiritual exercise and communication. PAINTER DAVID Ligare’s series of still lifes, Drapery Paintings: 1978-2023, will be on view at Winfield Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea through July 8. Ligare’s inspiration for these pieces dates back to the mid-1970s, when he first started painting images of white drapery piled on a table outside, on the deck of his house in Big Sur. After exploring this concept for a few years, he decided he wanted to do something different with the drapery; he started asking a friend to throw a piece of drapery into the air, so he could photograph it in a dynamic, floating state. These photographs became the basis for a series of paintings that Ligare created and named after Greek islands, in a nod to the influence of Greek Classicism on his work. “The paintings…

THE BALTIMORE Museum of Art (BMA) is hosting the exhibition “Martha Jackson Jarvis: What the Trees Have Seen,” an imaginative exploration of the artist’s ancestor Luke Valentine’s service in the Revolutionary War as a Black militiaman. Consisting of 13 abstract mixed-media paintings, the exhibit traces Valentine’s movements during the war from Virginia down to South Carolina, which Jarvis was able to trace after finding the testimony that Valentine gave to the United States Congress in order to receive his veteran’s pension. Jarvis personally retraced his route in 2019, over the course of nearly a year. While she traveled, she took note of the topography, marking the forests, waterways, and other elements of the natural landscape through which Valentine would have passed, using these to inform her artistic depiction of his…

A SERIES OF new works by abstract painter Su Kwak will debut at June Kelly Gallery this month. Titled “Crossing Boundaries,” the exhibition focuses on the painter’s consciousness of light and the boundaries that appear as a result of that consciousness. In Fire of Love, a purple and blue sea sits beneath a swirling, rosy sky with a warm pink sun emanating yellow light. The light here is dynamic and multi-faceted, moving up into the top of the canvas as well as reflecting off the sea. Waiting in Silence seems almost the inverse of this image—here, Kwak uses a primarily cool, blue palette to create a similar image of sea and sky, with a dark horizon line toward the bottom third of the canvas. The Broad Museum in Los Angeles will present the major exhibition “Keith Haring: Art is for Everybody” featuring 120 artworks by the iconic artist including paintings, video, sculpture, and more. Haring was a prolific artist well-known for his chalk subway drawings, which he created in subway stations around New York City, and his unique style of line drawing. A fervent believer that “art is for everybody,” he was also an activist whose work confronted many social issues, from race, to environmentalism, to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Haring himself died from AIDS in 1990. The Broad exhibition will include pieces like the Untitled (1982) image of a non-gendered couple holding up a bright red heart, and the also Untitled enamel and Dayglo painting from the same year.…

THE FIRST U.S. exhibition on the use of copper in the Arts and Crafts Movement, “The First Metal: Arts and Crafts Copper” is on view at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Portland, Ore. Including works from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, the show spotlights handwrought copper works by Arts and Crafts artisans working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Copper is called “the first metal” as it was literally the first metal that humans worked with, and was used around the globe from 9,000 B.C.E. IMMERSION IS “in.” Whether it’s Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Monet’s Water Lilies, or Gustav Klimt’s gilded worlds, viewers around the globe line up to enter great works of art, to be surrounded by them as they morph to the strains and rhythms of carefully orchestrated scores. Immersion is accomplished through virtual reality, holography, and digital projection onto walls and floors that are, in actuality, nothing less than giant screens. Visitors are meant to feel as if they are interacting with the artist’s imagination, that they are elements, even protagonists in the work. To a generation raised in a digital universe, I suppose immersive art exhibitions are at least equal to—and maybe even capable of surpassing—the experience of standing at MoMA in front of Van Gogh’s wheeling night sky or…

AN IMPORTANT painting featuring a Taos hunter by Oscar Berninghaus (1874–1952) fetched just over $1.5 million at the recent Scottsdale Art Auction, setting a record for his work. The oil-on-canvas study, The Hunters, Taos, depicts a group of Native Americans gathered in an idyllic grove of aspen trees and ready to hunt—with the focus on a lone hunter, set apart from the crowd, deep in thought. The aspens’ bruised and cracking trunks create a natural tapestry. Key details in the painting—the light-colored bow, the faded blanket wrapped around the hunter’s upper torso and arms—visually link the work to A Hunter of Taos Pueblo, the 1926 painting that won Berninghaus, who studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the Altman Prize at the National Academy of Design.
