ARCHITECTURE DOESN’T ARRIVE ALL AT once. There’s a lot to unpack and hang, ribbons to cut, names to gift. Such welcoming celebrations are important for community, yet it is worth reflecting that we rarely wear the same wardrobe from one event to another while increasingly asking buildings to dress for a multitude of functions. As sustainable programming catalogues a whole new look, we can’t forget what we are packaging. Fourteen projects by New Zealand architects have been short-listed for this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards, to be judged in late November. How did the concept for Picnicka come about? Our clients wanted to create a space where their guests could “graze and play”, so it needed to feel relaxed and at home but elevated enough to complement the restaurant’s excellent food and beverage offering. Essentially, all the fun of the traditional, long, relaxed European picnic was to be combined with the comfort and elegance of a modern restaurant. We wanted an underlying alfresco feeling, outdoorsy yet sophisticated, and an environment where you’d feel comfortable popping in for a morning coffee or brunch, as well as for dinner and cocktails in the evening. Uptown, where’s that? To most Aucklanders familiar with the isthmus, it’s a part of town just south of the central area, just over the motorway and just a place you go through to get somewhere else. But it wasn’t always like that. Uptown is what the local business association and residents are calling the area south of Spaghetti Junction: bounded by Upper Symonds Street, Newton Road, Khyber Pass and the northern ends of New North Road and Mount Eden Road. It’s an area that, many decades ago, had a big working-class population, several churches and plenty of shops, venues and light industry. THE WAVES ARE CLIMBING OUR SEA WALLS and gnawing away at our coastlines, storms are more frequent and intense, and waterfalls are falling from the skies. Climate change is upon us and one thing that has become more apparent in architecture is that we need to change our practices, not just to cope but to try to reduce emissions and assuage the worstcase scenarios. One of these is more adaptive re-use of existing buildings – even if you do have to strip an ugly bugger, such as some 1960s’ office building, back to its skeleton. Concrete is a major offender in terms of carbon footprint and it doesn’t make sense to demolish a concrete building and throw it into landfill in order to pour more of the stuff. This is…

I HAVE TO CONCEDE I HAVE a fairly facile view of the ground plane. It may be that it bears the burden of my inefficient means of perambulation, anything other than a flat surface mounting a challenge to my forward motion, slopes and hills, in particular, being a damn nuisance. Even a flat plane may conceal incipient impediments: small variations to catch a lazy heel or more substantial changes in plane that require a break in step to ensure my ‘good leg’ is the first to land. If this were a particular response of monopods only, I would feel slightly aggrieved and treat it as yet further evidence of a malign universe. Billed as being “taller than six Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnsons”, the new 12.8-metre-high tower at Eke Panuku’s Hayman Park in Manukau is now, officially, the tallest play tower in Aotearoa. The tower forms part of Stage 2 of a playground designed by Wraight Athfield Landscape + Architecture (WALA) and set in 10 hectares of parkland. It includes rope play equipment, an urban wave track and bump track, a skatepark, kiosk, nature play area and basketball courts. “The tower’s structural glulam columns and steel-and-timber envelope were prefabricated off site and craned into position overnight,” says Athfield’s Jon Rennie. “Play equipment and enclosures were then added on site; they include rope bridges, tunnels and two stainless-steel slides.” The tower has been designed to act as a marker in the wider townscape of…

MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE MY LAST VISIT TO the Ōtaki-based wānanga during the filming of Te Ara a Tāwhaki for the Whakaata Māori television series The Drawing Board in April last year. The former construction site across the road is now a lushly vegetated and thriving wetland, accommodating the latest additions to the rich collection of buildings that make up Te Wānanga o Raukawa. From the original re-purposed administration offices and classroom blocks to the newly crafted building projects, every addition to the wānanga from its inception in the early 1980s has contributed greatly to its evolution, representing the culmination of some 50 years of intergenerational strategic thinking and planning.
