(JURY CITATION) The transformation of George Street is one of Australia’s most significant urban projects, adding enormous social value to a critical public space. The long-called-for mission to reinstate light rail in the Sydney city centre was married with the creation of a pedestrian spine for the city, spurred by a brief that called for a street made for people over cars. Once a vehicle-clogged road, George Street has been transformed into over 20,000 square metres of considered pedestrian space – a calmer, civilising experience abundant with seats, new street planting, high-quality paving, and space to stroll and linger. It’s an exemplar of people-focused planning, showing how design can enrich cities and the lives within them.
