Sitting at the top of a hill in Northcote, Melbourne, Picket house is a two storey addition and alteration to a freestanding Edwardian timber house. When Austin Maynard Architects (AMA) took on the project, the building had been a sharehouse for decades and was in a state of disrepair. “I always knew I wanted to start my own practice,” says Benjamin Shields from his Brunswick studio. After a long stint at other architecture studios, Shields launched DREAMER in 2017 to develop his passion for the medium. Creative from a young age, he was attracted to architecture for its ability to capture a “physical representation of who we are at a particular place and time”. Architects have the skills to address key challenges of the present and the future. Climate change challenges, the housing crisis, and the demands on our expanding cities need ambitious architectural thinking. Architects are needed more than ever but their value is highly underrated. And we’re all the poorer for it. Designing for climate change Climate change is causing increasingly regular, extreme, and costly weather events—and the built environment is being severely affected. Who can forget images of, for example, the town of Lismore being submerged by the 2022 floods? The population needs building design that will withstand the full impact of climate change.
