This naturally shares an alignment with the values of B Corp certification by B Lab, a global non-profit network set up to validate companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. As of writing, there are currently more than 5800 certified B Corporations in 85 countries and over 158 industries. Transforming traditional and redefining this classical Italian pizzeria, Figlia brings a contemporary approach to the Italian dining experience in Melbourne’s iconic Lygon Street. The project connects to shape and embodies the local Brunswick East context and feel. While celebrating the history and tradition that is unique to Lygon Street, the project is designed to feel like an approachable venue that welcomes everyone. Designed by Melbourne multidisciplinary studio Ewert Leaf, this project was a no-brainer in creating a unique, modern contemporary design fitting with Lygon Street’s vibe. Tatiana Bilbao never met her grandfather, but he had a profound effect on her life nonetheless. As a politician in Spain’s Republican Government in the early part of the 20th century, he was forced to flee the country when Franco’s Nationalists won the Civil War, meaning Bilbao was born and grew up in Mexico City. But it wasn’t just his politics that influenced first Bilbao’s father and then Bilbao herself. Her grandfather was also an architect – a profession that she at first resisted entering. “As my father said once, I think I have it in my blood. My whole family, they’re all architects, [but] when I was 18, I really wanted to go as far as possible from architecture, to do something as different as possible from my family.”…

With the built environment now understood as one of the most egregious contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, any products that can lessen the impact of the construction industry on our national carbon footprint are to be welcomed. In 2019 Durra Panel voiced an ambitious goal, one that its managing director Derek Layfield has been working towards for four decades. The aim? To be the leading manufacturer of the world’s most sustainable building material. With Durra Panel, he may well be on the way. The material is used to make internal panels that can be used for wall cladding and ceiling linings.
