ArchiTeam is the membership cooperative for Australian architects working in small practices. After the pandemic forced its 2021 conference to be held entirely online, the team behind the next iteration of this biennial event say they’re very happy that this one will be a face-to-face affair. Herston Private Hospital (HPH) has taken naming rights over 7 Wren Street and is the largest tenant in the mixed-use development next to Queensland’s biggest public hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). The other major tenant is national fertility clinic operator Genea. The 10-level newly constructed tower is in a Queensland Government Priority Development Area (PDA). The 2020 Closing the Gap report revealed that there is a discrepancy of around 10 percent between Indigenous students and non-Indigenous students (around 82 percent compared to 92 percent in 2019) when it comes to school attendance. And, disappointingly, the target to halve this gap for Indigenous children in the five years up to 2018 was not met in any of Australia’s states or territories. Smart home project in Echuca Australian tech start-up X2M Connect has partnered with developer Resi Ventures to construct 1000 homes in northern Victoria that will be linked together in a ‘smart community grid’. The project will utilise a smart in-home gateway and Internet of Things (IoT) platform combined with solar energy to focus on: ■ improved energy management ■ fewer carbon emissions, and ■ lower energy bills. The agreement between X2M and Resi shows that X2M “is making a meaningful contribution to Australia’s move towards net zero via the delivery of innovative energy management solutions for residential, commercial and rural customer environments,” according to a press release. As CEO and founder of the Bushfire Building Council of Australia (BBCA) Kate Cotter has spent over a decade in the bushfire resilience advocacy space and says the scale and regularity of Australia’s natural disasters resulting in home loss has become so pronounced it’s now nigh on impossible to help people individually. “After the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires there were just so many people impacted, we really couldn’t resource helping everyone, due to the scale of the problem,” she says. The book is elegantly designed both in form and function. It has a heft that is worthy of the content, and the recycled paper is a pleasure to handle. It has a wonderful collection of archival photographs, site visits with politicians and family events, excellent sketches and architectural drawings all woven around interviews, essays and articles written about Gibson. If I gush too much, I remain unapologetic, this is a seriously impressive monograph.
