In a succinctly expressed version of the Micawber principle*, Sally Matthews displays her very practical approach to running a business. “The simple understanding of ‘outgoings must be less than amounts coming in’ has served us well,” she says. Matthews is the co-founder and director of Perth-based Matthews and Scavalli, running the practice with fellow director Andrea Veccia-Scavalli, while associate Damien Caraher is the company’s third shareholder. Over the last five years of Architectural Review you may have seen Matthews’ name pop up more than once – usually in a Brain Trust capacity – as one of the magazine’s most consistent spokespeople for Western Australia. “We were both in quite different places when we decided to start; it wasn’t particularly conscious or planned,” says Katherine Sainsbery, co-founder and director of Pop Architecture. “I’d left Wood Marsh earlier that year and I had a young child. Justine had taken a six-month industry sabbatical after leaving Architectus, and we connected late in 2016.” Sainsbery’s father, David Sainsbery, retired chief executive officer at Architectus, suggested she meet up with Justine Brennan, as a potential partner in business. “We call it an arranged marriage,” Sainsbery laughs. Already shortlisted for the Community Services and Sustainability Award at IDEA 2021, the Nyul Nyul Community Packing Shed recently won the Good Design Award in the Social Impact category in recognition of its outstanding design and innovation. The Good Design Awards Jury commented: “[This is] a wonderful collaborative design project. The shed in itself is a very powerful symbol for frugal and context-appropriate design. It is a scalable and effective solution and makes the case for design supporting creative decisions for people and planet. Advice to fledgling practices Start a practice with a person you get on with and trust, and also where you have complementary skills, so as not to double up in areas and tread on each other’s toes. Melmo: Modernist Architecture in Melbourne is a new release written by Robin Grow with contributions by Simon Reeves. This is a modest look at a topic that has been widely discussed in a variety of books over the past few years, but the author’s passion for this post-war period of architecture stands out.
