Consisting of eleven beaten-bronze plates, the armour solved a number of puzzles. Other pieces of armour similar to parts of the Dendra Panoply had been found in earlier excavations — in Thebes, Mycenae, Nichoria, Pylos, Phaistos, and (perhaps) Knossos. Others have been found since this find. Linear B ideograms from Knossos, Tiryns, and Pylos also resemble these suits. The earlier finds were not complete, and some parts were misidentified. The earliest Dendra find was initially identified as a helmet, but after eighteen years, it was realized that it was, in fact, a pauldron.
