On the morning of January 10, 1736, the ship Prince of Wales landed in Savannah, Georgia, carrying 177 Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlanders on their way to settle in the new colony in the area of what was to become Darien, Georgia. There were men, women, boys and girls of all ages and walks of life. Their number contained a mariner, a surgeon, three tailors, one joiner, one weaver, four men listed as gentlemen, 25 farmers and 70 men listed as servants and laborers. They were armed, decked out in traditional Highland clothing and ready to take on the new world.
