“Gentle reader, do you know the eager, painful joy of mountain exploration—the treading of forests…the crashing and crawling through the thickets of stunted firs and spruces… claw[ing] the clothing of the alpine aspirant; the ascending of the beds of mountain-brooks to find some waterfall worthy of renown…hidden in deep mountain basin and visited only, and not reported on, by logger and trapper.” Such were the words of Edith Walker Cook (1839-1902) in A New England Pilgrimage, published in 1885. She implies that the “logger and trapper” had witnessed natural wonders, but she, the artist-explorer, unlocked and reported them. Cowboy hats, bucking horses, grizzly attacks, buffalo hunts—Western art was king at the annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction on July 27 in Reno, Nevada. The sale achieved more than $17.5 million in sales with a 93 percent sell-through rate. The works were offered in a marathon sale that included more than 400 lots. Bidding can go on for hours, and the event has become a rite of passage for art collectors who wait patiently for their lots to come up. Despite its length and long runtime, the chairs are full. It’s a very exciting time in the historic art world. In only a few years, I’ve seen artists explode onto the market whose names I can’t imagine not knowing now. I have also witnessed a more gradual emergence of artists coming onto the scene and, while not as exhilarating as the jaw-dropping break-out sales that Lynne Drexler, Agnes Pelton and Gertrude Abercrombie have seen, perhaps this slow and steady trend is more telling—and compelling. Historic women artists, in particular, are garnering attention (and not just the big names anymore) as museums and galleries make them the centerpiece of exhibitions. Deep Waters An upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston explores the works of four artists who capture oceanscapes, including historic artists John Singleton Copley and J.M.W. Turner, and contemporary artists John Akomfra and AyanaV. Born in Poland, married in Russia and celebrated in Paris, Tamara de Lempicka and her works are widely known across the Atlantic Ocean, where she was then, and remains still today, an icon of Art Deco. But Lempicka’s reach extended to North America, including in 1939 when the artist, fleeing the outbreak of World War II, moved to the United States, where she would remain until her death in 1980. Although a large chapter of her career was spent in North America—in Beverly Hills, California; Houston, Texas; and Cuernavaca, Mexico—Lempicka has never received a museum retrospective in the United States. In its exhibition Up East: Andrew Wyeth in Maine, the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, the rural area where Andrew Wyeth lived half of the year, celebrates the paintings he created in the coastal area where he spent the spring and summer. The 31 watercolors, two major temperas and fascinating archival materials are drawn from the collection of theWyeth Foundation for American Art. William Coleman is the inaugural Wyeth Foundation curator and director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum. On December 8, Freeman’s | Hindman will present its seasonal American Art and Pennsylvania Impressionists sale in Philadelphia. More than 100 lots are expected in the sale. Highlights include Thomas Hart Benton’s 1952 egg tempera work The Doctor, estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. Figurative works of this quality by Benton are rare to the market, and this one should excite bidders for its color and clarity, as well as the little details in the painting, such as the swoopy curves of the clothing and chair, the concerned look on the doctor’s face and the spots on the boy’s cheek. Also available is Thomas Wilmer Dewing’s 1921 oil The Music Lesson, a small work that measures 16 by 14 inches. The work, modern in composition but classic in subject, is estimated…

Amajor highlight in Swann Galleries’ November 12 Modern & Post-War Art sale is an oil on paper collage by French artist Bernard Réquichot (1929-1961). The untitled work, anticipated to achieve between $50,000 and $80,000, is emblematic of the artist’s surrealist compositions that blend figurative and abstract elements. Among the exciting offerings of American art is a unique 1995 watercolor and gouache by Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) composed on a small, handwritten menu that has a low estimate of $6,000. “Clement Greenberg, a forceful but influential critic in the Post-War American art scene, championed Frankenthaler and her innovative thinning and pouring of pigments on canvas (stain painting),” notes an auction house representative. “In the early 1950s when Frankenthaler began showing these works, she received praise and ridicule. Bonhams Skinner’s September sale American Art Online saw a 75 percent sell through rate, achieving a total of $560,680, with two works by television personality, painter and art instructor Bob Ross (1942-1995) landing among the top ten lots. After three decades, Museum of Modern Art director Glenn D. Lowry has announced that he will be stepping down from the position next year. Appointed in 1995, Lowry is the longest serving director in MoMA’s history, having guided the museum through numerous major renovations and expansions over the years. Curator and gallerist Caitlin Berry has been appointed the inaugural director of the new Irene and Richard Frary Gallery at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center, scheduled to open in October. Berry will curate and promote the new art gallery’s rotating series of exhibitions exploring the intersection of arts and democracy that will be free and open to the public. Among over 20 new acquisitions to the holdings of the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, is a significant painting by renowned artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). The oil on canvas titled George Frederick McCorquodale, 1902, is a recent gift from Joe Szymanski in honor of his friend Andy Musser, and it exemplifies the American ex-patriot painter at the height of his career as a high-society portraitist. The painting was originally commissioned by the sitter’s daughter for her 21st birthday. From the turn of the 19th century to the 20th, through the tragedy of the FirstWorld War, through the “Lost Generation” between that war and the Second World War and the Nazi occupation of the “City of Light,” Paris was the cultural heart of the world, a haven and destination for artists, freethinkers and “free livers” of every stripe. And yet, the public imagination has, for the most part, been dominated by men—mostly white men—like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, like F. Scott Fitzgerald and, of course, Ernest Hemingway. Women—other than Gertrude Stein, whose salons fomented the broth of ideas that bubbled in Paris—were seen as ancillary to the art and anxieties of famous men. Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) is known as one of the country’s most important painters of the 19th century, excelling in portraiture and genre paintings during and after the Civil War. Born in Maine 200 years ago, Johnson is being honored on his bicentennial with his firstsolo exhibition in Maine. The Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville presents Eastman Johnson and Maine through December 4. In the western art tradition, genre paintings are “pictures of everyday life.” Although, today, we may admire his painting prowess in composing bucolic scenes of corn husking and maple sugaring, Johnson was a Unionist and addressed the Civil War and the abolition of slavery in his work.
