What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why? I’m really excited to see Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces, organized by Thomas Jean Lax and Lilia Rocio Taboada, that’s opening at MoMA in October. I’m very keen to see how they are able to translate a sense of place and the importance of relationality that drove JAM gallery, and which fuels its legacy. What are you reading? I’m reading about the biology of seeing art, or how the eye and brain process an artwork, because just as I’m interested in how the materiality of an artwork contributes to its meaning, I’m also interested in how the architecture of the body shapes our experiences of artworks. During the first quarter of the 20th century, a rich cauldron of abstraction was bubbling in Europe, from Cubism, Bio-morphism and Constructivism, to the spiritual abstraction of Kandinsky which captured the imagination of a small number of individual American artists. By the middle of the third decade, a critical mass of European emigres and American artists working in abstraction banded together to found two significant organizations. The largest of these loosely affiliated groups was the American Abstract Artists, founded in New York in 1936, whose leading spokesmen were George L. K. Morris, Carl Holty and Charles Green Shaw. Grandma Moses (Ann Mary Robertson Moses) (1860-1961) stole the show at Bonhams Skinner’s American auction on September 21, with two of her pieces selling for a grand total of $177,149. May, Making Soap, Washing Sheep crested its high estimate of $90,000 to reach a sale price close to $114,000; while Beyond the Lake came close to reaching its high estimate of $70,000. Although marketing her works was the furthest possible idea from Grandma Moses’ mind, her arrival in the art market couldn’t have been better.
