In the late-19th and early-20th centuries, artists from Europe and the United States flocked to Venice, Italy, to take in the sights, paint the canals and lagoon, sip coffee on St. Mark’s Square and enjoy the Italian sunlight as it raked across the historic stonework that towers over those famously narrow streets. Art and antique dealers enjoyed a successful opening night at The Philadelphia Show, an art and antique fair that drew more than 2,000 people over the course of the weekend-long event. Schwarz Gallery sold six paintings on opening night, and Jeffrey Tillou Antiques sold many pieces, including a rare tiger maple dressing. Exhibitors offering jewelry, antiques and fine art all reported receiving an overall positive response and interest from collectors. Among other significant sales was a Henry McCarter pastel landscape from Dixon-Fine Art to a local museum and that of a George Cope painting from H.L. The close of Swann Auction Galleries’ March 31 African American Art sale yielded thrilling results—earning $3.6 million. Consisting of post war and contemporary works, the auction realized an 89 percent sell-through rate, with 214 of a total 241 lots finding homes. This only further illustrates Swann’s claims of continued success in the genre and“proving the breadth of the market,” says Nigel Freeman, director of African American art at Swann. “We’ve been doing these auctions of African American art since February of 2007, making this our 15th year,” Freeman explains. “Of course, the market has changed immensely since then, and recent trends are always interesting because the market continues to evolve. After missing two annual shows due to the pandemic, the American Art Fair roared back to life May 14 to 17 at the Bohemian National Hall in NewYork City. Western art is continuing to prove its strength within American art with another stellar sale at the Scottsdale Art Auction in Arizona on April 8 and 9. The annual sale not only achieved nearly $15 million in sales, but accomplished a 99 percent sell-through rate. “We are very, very pleased. It’s always fun when we have so little left. This year we had just five unsold pieces out of 445 lots.
