Are kitchens still the heart of the home—the hub where family or friends naturally gravitate towards? We think so! I still warmly recall memories of my great grandmother’s big enamelware coffee pot percolating on the stove while rusk bread was buttered and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Wafting aromas from turkey feasts and cookie baking bring back fond remembrances of my mom’s cozy eat-in kitchen, while fried walleye with corn on the cob reminds me of lively family gatherings around the kitchen at the lake cabin. Being an empty nester now, I still love being in the kitchen: gazing out the window at birds with my morning coffee, simmering pots of potpourri just for fun and puttering around with my décor. Sometimes you don’t set out to find your next category of collectibles—it finds you. Such was the case for Diane Sedo, a longtime collector of household items from the 1930s and ’40s. When she was in her early twenties, Diane came home one day to find her recently deceased grandmother’s vintage pottery lying in the rock yard, destined for the dumpster.
