My husband and I are thrilled to welcome a beautiful baby girl into our family and have been enjoying the baby cuddles and smiles. The sleepless nights didn’t last too long either—thankfully, she’s a great little sleeper. I’m excited to return for our kitchens and baths issue, because I’ve personally been in the remodel phase for these spaces in my own home. Our house was built in 1988 and was full of 30-year-old builder-grade basics when we moved in. Pie safes have protected baked goods for centuries, but they weren’t created just for pies. They were originally made in the early 1700s to hold all types of perishable food, especially items that needed to cool after baking. Pie safes often have characteristic tin panels punched with small holes, generally in a pattern. The tin panels usually double as doors but occasionally are installed along the sides of the cabinet. Their purpose is to encourage air circulation while also keeping out vermin and insects. Pie safes are either freestanding on four elevated legs (to further discourage critters) or countertop units that can sit on the kitchen work surface. I will never forget the first time I laid eyes on the glorious green milk glass. This wonderful kitchenware, which has grown to immense popularity in the last 30 years, is known as jadeite. I started collecting jadeite when I was 16, and I’ve never looked back! “In the end it still feels very cohesive. It was a team effort.” Five bathrooms in one home that all needed to fit a cohesive feel? No problem. Designer Michelle Lisac of Michelle Lisac Interior Design was ready was up to the task in a newly constructed modern farmhouse in northern California. Michelle calls it Farmhouse with Napa style. Throughout the project, she sought out pieces “that felt handmade, not fresh and perfect,” she says. “We incorporated hand-hewn looking pieces. Dark cannot exist without light and vice versa. “When I’m using darker colors I also balance them against lighter, brighter colors,” Kim says. “When I chose those dark cabinets, I knew that I had to balance that with a brighter white.” DEPTH. Painting all of her walls in a warm, bright white was the catalyst for creating beautiful pops of dark color throughout the house. But Kim used myriad darker shades to create variation and depth in the design concept as well. Mine had a wood base, but some that have been used before might require minor repairs.2. Turn the cage over, and using a pencil, mark the placement of the casters on the base of the cage with a tape measure to ensure spacing is equal. When the tin is punched into an image like an eagle or star, this can also impact its value.• CONDITION.
