When you’re adding vintage treasures to your décor, the hunt is half the fun, but knowing the history behind your collections can be just as satisfying. Transferware is available in a wide variety of dishes, from affordable travel souvenir plates and turkey platters to exquisite and difficult-to-find English-made pieces from the 1700s. Transferware is an art form in which a design or pattern is transferred from an inked, hand-engraved copper plate to wet tissue paper and then placed on a piece of pottery, usually china or porcelain. After several additional steps and firing in a kiln, the piece is complete. Beginning in 1760 in the Staffordshire region of England, the transferware process, versus hand painting each piece, made beautiful dishware affordable. •WALLS. There are many larger surfaces in a room where you can add plaids. Go big with a buffalo-check wallpaper, or use it on the upper walls with wainscoting underneath. You could even paint the walls yourself in a large checked pattern, which would work well for a children’s bedroom or guest bedroom. • WINDOWS. If you prefer nonpatterned walls, try gingham or plaid curtains with your preferred color palette. The entire backyard of the Palmer home was designed and built by Tony, who put his many years of builder experience to good use. The driving aesthetic for the backyard was an old-fashioned Western town and dockyard. Tony wanted an authentic look and used real rocks he cut himself around the pool and waterfall. He even selected a large rock to use as a diving board. A rustic dock extends partially over the pool with a mini crane to bring the area to life. “Plaid” is a general term that refers to a checkered or tartan cloth. But there’s a wide variety of plaid and checked patterns, many of which are ideal for farmhouse style. When it comes to choosing a plaid or checked pattern, here are some of the different types and how to distinguish them. TARTAN The most traditional type of plaid pattern, tartan, is a Scottish plaid.
