The Great Lakes Region refers to the area around Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, whose surfaces total 95,000 square miles to form the largest surface freshwater system on Earth. The region encompasses parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—a huge swath of the Mid-west and beyond, defined by busy urban centers and scenic getaways.
