ARC Salon Announces Winners The winners and finalists of the Art Renewal Center’s 16th International ARC Salon Competition have been announced. The ARC received over 5,400 entries from 75 countries, with 2,152 works selected as semi-finalists, and 1,273 as the finalists. Both finalists and semi-finalists have been published on the ARC website and all finalists and award winners will be published in the ARC Salon Book, International Realism. Artificial food and fast lights forge cheerful islands of color against gray and darkened streets in urban paintings by Marc Trujillo, memorializing the ghastly spread of ruthlessly economical architecture in beautifully rendered glazed grisailles. Trujillo’s technical oil portraits of buildings superficially resemble Edward Hopper’s urban nocturnes but shed Hopper’s comforting harmonies of nostalgia by using cold L.E.D.’s and strip lights for illumination. Hopper’s tones are warm and jazz-like and sing tragic melodies of men and women finding themselves alone. Trujillo’s songs of San Fernando, California’s streets are cold and electric and indifferent to individuality. Hopper’s buildings tell us about people. Diana Beresford-Kroeger was orphaned as a young girl and brought up by her uncle. She spent her summers in Ireland where the local people—in their 80s and 90s—decided she would be taught the ancient Brehon laws of Celtic wisdom. “These laws,” she recounts, “are the laws of wisdom, the laws of telepathy, the laws of meditation, education…about the medicines of the natural world and the laws of the trees.” Today, she is a medical biochemist, botanist and climate change visionary. My conflation of Michael Scott with fire began when I sat in his living room contemplating a large painting of a snowy owl rising phoenix-like from a fire as he cooked dinner for his guests over an open fire in his kiva. Over the years I’ve thought more about that conflation and about his representation of the four elements in his landscape paintings. I thought of them as representations of themselves—earth, air, fire, water—as discreet elements in the landscape. Recently I saw his study, Geyser and Sky Fire, and suddenly grasped the depth of his representations of the elements, their interrelationships and their intimations of something other. The geyser became more than a visible explosion of water and steam. The phenomenon is caused by invisible fire deep within the earth.…

As winter’s grip begins to loosen in the Rocky Mountains, a show of new works by Colorado artists Jane DeDecker and Nancy Switzer harkens the energy and light of early spring. Loveland, Colorado-based DeDecker was named one of USA Today’s Women of the Year in 2022. She earned this honor for teaming up with Colorado lawmaker Jody Shadduck-McNally to erect a national monument to commemorate women’s suffrage. After years of building partnerships with prominent national leaders, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument will be unveiled in 2027 in Washington, D.C. Lee Vasu has been hosting an annual juried exhibition of exceptional women artists at Dacia Gallery in New York’s East Village for 10 years now. For one week a year, the Tequesta, Florida, area comes alive with a plethora of free demonstrations, workshops, paint-outs and, of course, opportunities to purchase astonishing works of art.
