A solo exhibition of paintings by Eileen Murphy, hosted by Garvey|Simon, is currently on view at DFN Projects in New York City. Curator and producer Zoe Lukov and cultural producer Abby Pucker recently announced the launch of Art in Common, a non-profit creative enterprise through the development of large-scale and site-responsive group exhibitions and programs that speak to a variety of creative, sociopolitical and spiritual issues existing today. The complexity of nature is mirrored Julia Lucey’s aquatint etching collages. She can be inspired by the flora and fauna in her own yard or what she sees on hikes along the trails that surround her northern California home. She comments, “My work has always been inspired by my love of being outside in wild places. It is not just the calming escape it creates, but the curiosity and desire to know what inhabits each place. I have been creating individual etchings of the plants and animals that live near my home. In his novel, Strider: The Story of a Horse, Leo Tolstoy tells the story of the decline of a Hussar officer from the point of view of his equally aging horse revealing the author’s own concern for mortality. He had written, “Only people who are capable of loving strongly can also suffer great sorrow, but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract their grief and heals them.” Artist Shelli Langdale works through the grief of losing her beloved horse, Ziggy, through painting. “There was a quiet comfort and connection in my relationship with Ziggy,” she says. “After almost 18 years together, our communication was subtle, effortless. A new exhibition at Gebert Contemporary, based in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona, features the contemporary abstract artwork of Betty Merken. Luke Hillestad’s recent show of oils at Copro Gallery in Los Angeles was full of medicine and magic, an offering of herbal healing through images of pagan and Christian mythology and lore. For nearly three months, beginning in mid-over the southwest corner of Hayden Road and the Loop 101 in Scottsdale, Arizona, its distinctive white tent creating a temporary home for the working studios of 100 artists from around the country. Now in its 33rd year, the juried invitational has earned a reputation as one of the West’s premier art shows and working studio events. Unlike other masters of photorealism for whom technique and surface are often paramount, John Baeder revels in his subjects—diners, mostly, and in his photographic still lifes, objects with deep personal meaning. M.B. Abram, who represents Baeder and is collaborating with ACA Galleries in an ongoing retrospective of the artist’s work, writes, “Many of Baeder’s photorealist peers were pre-occupied with shiny surfaces, reflections in store windows, forced perspective, and showy composition. Of the hyperrealists of the early ‘70’s, only Baeder embraced imagery that could be appreciated by everyday people and simultaneously, could be interpreted in terms of human values and archetypal relationships.” Driving to and from his college campus, Baeder “unconsciously saw” the diners, gas stations and motels along the way and began to collect postcards of them from the 20s…

Central Florida artist John Guiseppi is a self-taught colored pencil artist and photographer specializing in scenes that are “considered outside the norm and familiar,” ranging from portraits and cityscapes to nature and landscapes—and even cars. He’s especially drawn to classic-era cars, motorcycles and machinery, capturing the ornate designs of these human creations. In 65 Ford Mustang, we see the steering wheel and shiny red interior of this vintage automobile. “I have always had an interest in the classic ’50s/’60s era vehicles. Their unique dashes, gauges, steering wheels, emblems and corners. [The] hard details, sharp lines, fabulous fins and the corners,” says Guiseppi. “The ’65 Mustang was one that had always interested me, as I took my initial driver’s test in a ’65 Mustang. Artist Matthew Bird is self-admittedly a very slow painter. It can take the greater part of a day to set up his still life compositions after curating the objects and hours more planning out the piece to determine what areas must remain white—and weeks more to complete it. But his perfectionism pays off in the end with jewellike works that sparkle with detail and a substantiality rarely achieved in watercolor. “My wife often calls me a glutton for punishment,” says Bird. She is not only referring to Bird’s pursuit of painting realistically in watercolor—which is no minor feat—but for being drawn to subject matter precisely because how challenging it looks to paint. As a lifelong Nebraskan, Martha Pettigrew’s interest in rural architecture began in early childhood when family entertainment was an evening drive in the country. “My dad would point out an old corn crib, the occasional round barn or the block-and-tack apparatus used to raise loose hay up into the gaping loft of a huge, red, gambrel-roofed structure,” says Martha. The old barns, she explains, were hand-built using mortise-and-tenon joints, pegged into place—the distinct styles of architecture originating from different parts of Europe. These utilitarian structures, made to shelter animals, equipment and hay, were a real source of pride to the farming families. “My paintings emphasize my own interpretation of color, shape and shadow,” she adds. The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is set to in early 2023 in preparation to move from its existing building into a new facility. Currently under construction, this new 71,000-square-foot space will directly neighbor the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens, all located within the Arboretum at Penn State. A new virtual exhibition hosted by Chicago’s 33 Contemporary explores the concept of incorporating halos in contemporary art. The show, Circle of Light: Halos in Contemporary Art, is accessible through the Artsy website (www.artsy.net) and runs for the month of January. “The halo has become a widely recognized design feature in art due to its frequent association with divinity, importance and purity,” says Sergio Gomez, director of 33 Contemporary and curator of Circle of Light. “These days, contemporary artists may use this symbol to imply a wide range of thoughts and meanings, not just religious ones. For painter Jeffrey Vaughn, it is all about nature, and more specifically, flowers. While the artist’s past work focused more on landscape imagery, his one-man show at George Billis Gallery zooms in on florals of all kinds—spring blossoms on trees in particular. The show will feature nearly a dozen oil paintings of flowers in close-up view, illuminating Vaughn’s specialty in side-and backlighting. “Flowers in spring are the items in focus,” Vaughn says of his new work, “and instead of painting the entire tree of a dogwood, for example, the paintings are tightly cropped. Annik Janssens, from Belgium, has been immensely fascinated by nature, animals and drawing for her entire life. For the past six years, that passion has led her to create photorealistic pastels that capture the characters of a variety of different animals—from orangutans and zebras to foxes and deer. “After all, images say so much more than words. I try to convey to the viewer that they are all individuals, each with their own character and personality.
